Smoking Ghost

Firstly a bit of background on my house. I've lived here for the vast majority of my life except for a 3 year gap whilst at university. My parents bought the house when I was 6 months old from a group of elderly siblings after one of them died (the remaining 2 moved into a bungalow across the road). It's a rather old house, built sometime in the 30's during WW2 and still has an air raid shelter in the garden.

The encounter took place in the bathroom; however, this room was originally a bedroom and wasn't converted into a bathroom for about 8 or 9 years after we moved in. It was, however, in a great state of disrepair and we never used it as it was unsafe until we converted it.

I'm not sure of the date as this took place at least 10 years ago now, but it was still several years after we turned the room into a bathroom.

Anyway, it was rather late at night and I was stood by the sink (which faces a large window) brushing my teeth before bed. Out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a greyish mist floating by the toilet to my left, but when I turned to look properly there was nothing there. I didn't think much of it but then moments later I got the sensation that someone walked behind me (from my left by the toilet) and outside the door to my right. And as this happened I got the very distinct smell of cigarettes; you know, the typical smell of a heavy smoker, which vanished after a few seconds. Now the window was shut (I checked) and my family are all non-smokers so no one had smoked in that house for well over a decade so there was no logical explanation I could think of.

The next day I mentioned what happened to my mum and she told me that the people who lived here before (the siblings) were all heavy smokers. I did not know this before the incident. I just knew that there were three of them and one of them died and that the other two still lived over the road.

I've always felt that this house was quite spooky and had heard the odd strange noise and such, but had never experienced smelling anything or seeing mists. And I've never experienced anything that big since.

Actually I do have one experience about this house that may be worth publishing. It's very brief but it does involve objects being moved and ending up in places that they couldn't have just landed in. Will get round to sending it tomorrow hopefully. I had completely forgotten until I just read a story that involved something similar!

As I've lived in house for the vast majority of my life all the little isolated incidences are not worth writing a story about - plus in the 20 years I've lived here it's hard to recall them all. I don't think there is anything active in the house but I've always felt the house has an 'atmosphere' so to speak. It's quite hard to explain. I do have some more stories about a house I lived in during my final year of uni to publish though which are a bit more sinister and have been experienced by several people if anyone is interested.

You mentioned about only one incident of smelling. Did you experience the same again? You said about odd noises you hear in that house. You have not narrated about those incidents. Well, I don't say that it is not true. But, there could be other explanations to the smell. So, without any further information, I feel it is hard to believe it is a paranormal.

rainbow-rose,

This could well be residual. The dwelling played home to these siblings for many years so it is very possible there are many recordings in the house.

That aside, I too wouldn't rule out debunking paranormal sightings as many alleged sightings can be easily explained away.

Great story,

The smell only occurred as I got the sensation of someone walking past me, just like when someone who has just smoked a cigarette walks past and you smell it for a few seconds. I have previously seen doors moving and heard strange noises. I have always felt uneasy on the stairs for some reason and still do to this day. One time when I was about 9 I woke up to see a young girl standing in my doorway who smiled and waved then scowled at me as I didn't wave back and started to walk towards me and vanished. I've never been sure if I dreamt it or not though. My mum has been visited by her aunt in the past, however she didn't smoke and was never connected to the house.

rainbow-rose,

Not to discount your experience but I have to say something here...

The smell of smoke (cigarette's, cigars, pipes or even from a fire in the home) can penetrate the walls and wood of the home... This smell can be released as the wood expands or contracts based on heat/humidity of any given day. Having said that...

Any one part of your experience could have a natural explanation... But taken together as a whole makes for a very believable experience... Perhaps residual in nature... That you happened to witness.

Has anything else ever happened to you, or anyone else, in this home? Thanks for sharing.

Respectfully,

Rook

I've seen dates from the 30s written in pencil on some of the doors so I'm guessing the shelter would have been added shortly after - I know it was extended a few years after it was built so it was likely added then.

Bro, a very small cortection: WW2 didn't involve the UK in tbe 1930's. Otherwise, great story and thanks for sharing.
