A Lady With Long Hair

I just have one ghost acquaintance in my life. It was when I was studying in collage back in India. Those days I use to stay in hostel. I was 20, and my exams where going on. Both me and my friend saw it. It was around 1 AM, we were in the study hall preparing for the exam next day. There were a few more girls in the study hall.

After feeling tired of reading, and because it was so late at night I was feeling sleepy, so just for a change and to refresh, I looked out of the window. There in distance I saw a lady in white Saari (Traditional dress of Indian ladies), she was some 5' tall, had long black hair (it was knee length long), was combing it with her fingers. The best part is, this lady was not standing on the ground but she was at top of a house, I could see her so clearly because there was light from the street lamp above her.

I blinked my eyes, but still it was there. I did it again and again, but no change I could still see her. I showed it to my friend, she too could see her. We called the other girls, but by the time they came it was gone. I should say it faded away.

The next day after our exams, we (me and my friend) walked to the direction where we saw this lady the previous night. There was nothing, not even that house. The lamp post was there, but the bulb was broken and was covered with spider web.

I had totally forgotten about this incident, but now after reading the other stories, I remembered it. I still don't know what I saw that night. Was it my mind playing trick after I got exhausted studying, but how is it possible that my friend too saw it... Guess it was a ghost itself.

Hi NB, your story reminded me of an experience I had when I was a child. I had gone to visit Ladakh in India, and I was sleeping with in my host's guest room and I had a dream (Well I am still not sure whether I saw it with my eyes or was it just a psychic nightmare) with similar details, just to find the next day that the lady in that house had committed suicide an year ago. I was scared then but I didn't question much and forgot the incident.

Hi NB, I don't know your name so I am calling you NB. It was a nice story, I think probably the ghost may be a witch and they are visible to very few peoples & you were among the few peoples, The place may be was haunted. Just I like to know whether you had visited that place again or not. If you get chance just visit that place and inquire about it but be cautious while visiting and carry God Photos which will help to ward off evil spirits.
God Bless You and Your Family.

I totally agree with allesgute154. Mohini was one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. This type of paranormal entity can be discribed as a 'Daayan'.

Hi, you had asked "At that time, I was menstruating and my mom vehemently forbade me from going. I wonder why... Any answers,"
Yes, as per the common beliefs the things which attracts the spirits to a living body are the following.
Open and long hair. Specially female.
Strong but sweet fragrances.
Sense of despair or desire to die.
Raw and uncooked meat (chicken/mutton etc).
Women in periods, specially if you bleeding heavily. Or bloodied garments or dress worn by another person during his or her death worn later by a living person.
Certain stages of pregnancies.
And as I said, those are common beliefs. I have heard them often from numerous elders but never had a scientific explanation or test carried out.
Except one case where my friend got bothered by a ghost on way to Satpura since he was carrying raw/uncooked chicken for about a party of 8~10 trekkers.

Another thing I remember is my mom telling me never to venture out of the house with my hair left open. Apparently, it's an open invitation to being possessed by a spirit. Also, one day when we were out on a family trip to Matheran, some people suggested visiting a cemetery there at midnight. At that time, I was menstruating and my mom vehemently forbade me from going. I wonder why... Any answers, anybody?

So far as I know, and from hearing and reading Indian mythology, Mohini was the female form taken by Lord Vishnu to ensure that the 'amrit' (nectar) churned out from the sea went only to the gods. So, Mohini has a positive and divine connotation. This story narrated by NB shows something negative. The woman in the sari, in my opinion, is a 'daayan' (a witch). These entities have long hair and practice black magic. Different cultures describe them differently. Mostly they are described as having long hair (chotis/braids) and all their black power is concentrated in their hair, their feet are inverted (ulte), their powers are at maximum on Amavasya (new moon day) and they cannot enter a place of worship. The only way to apparently destroy them is to cut their hair. For more info, check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Daayan_Cult

I think it's a residual haunting. Whereby the image is not just of a ghost, but also a building. Most Asian entity can be found on the roof or tall places and rarely near ground level. The very reason for being unable to rest and also the taller places like roof/ treetops are usually darker.
The Malays from Indonesia/ Malaysia/ Singapore speak of an entity known as Pontianak/ Kutilanak which is very common found appearing on trees and scratching rooftops. They are out to create disturbance and when they do, usually a strong stench or frangipani scent is present. Most of these spirits are woman who died during child birth and reanimated using black magic of Javanese origins. There also a believe that they feed on unborn child and blood of mentruation. 😠
For the Thai culture they have similar ghost Nang Nak, which is a famous ghost story. The depiction of the ghost is a beautiful lady whose love for his husband (sent to fight a war) caused its spirit to be unrest and constantly await for the husband to come back to her. She was also found on rooftops/ walking on ceilings of those neighbours who tried/ intended to inform her husband that Nang Nak has died during childbirth when he left. Which also gave most Thai film producers or public impression that ghost roam around 'high places' unlike the zombies we see in western culture.
Perhaps it seem wrong for me to link all of them to the same cause but there are too much similarities.

Could you check to see if a house was once at that site? She could have been part of a residual haunting.

sds,

That's just it I studied a bit of mythology from various cultures from around the world, but that knowledge doesn't let me know the detailed folklore that surrounds the myths. So thank you for the details.

Respectfully,

Rook

Dear Rook, God Vishnu did take Mohini avatar to seduce some asuras to their doom. You know a lot about our mythology. My respect towards you go up with every post of yours I read. But I would like to tell you and Riri, that what I referred to as Mohini is totally different.

Mohini, to put in a nutshell, can be created for a specific purpose, to seduce a person or persons. The details are available in Atharva Veda. But the exponents of Atharva Veda are very scarce now-a-days. There are two kinds of exponents, one who does create such Mohinis and use it for evil purposes. They are called "Dhun Manthravadhis" (literal english meaning would be evil black magicians) and the other sect is exactly the opposite, who try to help people to get rid of these Mohinis or such entities. They are termed as "Sun Mathravadhis" (good black magicians). Sorry, there are no exact translation, atleast, I don't know.

There are other Mohinis also, which also seduce and kill. They are, according our Hindu custom, spirits of young girls died, who had hidden sexual feelings and after their demise, they try to satisfy themselves luring young males.

If you still require more information, I would be happy to explain. Probably certain things cannot be explained in this site. But I would definitely through e-mail.

Regards and respects to both of you.

Riri,

Mohini: Is the only female avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu. She is portrayed as a femme fatale, an enchantress, who maddens lovers, sometimes leading them to their doom.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Respectfully,

Rook

Hello NB, welcome to YGS and thanks for sharing your story. If both your friend and you have seen the house and the lady standing on top of the house, then that is quite interesting. I want to ask did you make any further investigation about the incident to the residents in the area or some of your hostel friends, if they have come across any such experiences. You said you saw out of the window of your hostel. Then did you not initially realise when you saw the lady over the house, that the house was not there earlier. I think it might not be a ghost but a Mohini, going by what you described.

Regards and respects to you.

Very cool story. 😊 Since two of you saw the same thing at the same time, it's obvious you saw something. Could you have been mistaken about the location of the house perhaps? Although I have read a few stories on the site about places that seem to come and go, and that could be the case as well.
