Mysterious 'knocking' At My Parents' House

This event happened at my parent's house when I was either 16 or 17.

My parent's house has always been 'strange', even to this day. Ever since my brother and I were small, I remember weird events happening every now and again. It was when I hit my teen years did the events become more 'creepy' and regular.

My brother had been working late shifts, well past everyone's bedtime. We only had one functioning car at the time and that car had always been parked outside. My brother didn't have a key to the back door so he would have to go through the backyard and tap my window to wake me up so I would get up and go unlock the back door.

I was out like a light one night when I was abruptly woken up by an awful tapping against the glass of the backdoor. It sounded like someone was hitting the glass with all their might with the tip of a key or something metal.

I woke up in a panic, thinking that I had missed my brother's initial window-knocking signal to wake up, and now he was angry for being left outside. As I scrambled out of bed and ran through the dark house, it did not occur to me that the noise was so very loud and the tapping absolutely did not stop, pause, or hesitate at all. It was a constant tap tap tap tap tap, and honestly it would be loud enough to wake up everyone in the household. It truly was that loud.

The tapping continued even as I approached the backdoor. I flipped on the backyard's light and the very second that the light flooded the area and I looked out the glass panels to see no one there, the noise stopped. Dead silence. I was all alone.

Confused, and hoping that my brother was playing a trick on me, I went into the living room and peeked out the curtains to see if his car was there. Nothing.

At that point I got very, very creeped out and turned on the family room lamp and watched TV until I saw my brother pull up to the house. I didn't want to sleep until the sun rose.

The next day I did ask my parents if they had heard anything the previous night. They said no, but I find that impossible since they always leave their small bathroom window open and it is 10ft or so away from the back door. They aren't the heaviest of sleepers, either. No one in my family can reason this event away, so whenever it is brought up we always get goosebumps!

Thankfully this did not happen again.

Udon- I definitely always try to put myself in the poster's shoes to try and understand what they experienced. But it definitely does sound like it could be an unsolved mystery. They're always the best though because it shows there wasn't an logical explanation.
Definitely keep us updated! I'd like to hear anything new you find out! 😊

Sparkie- Thanks for taking the time to test out the sound with your own car keys! Now imagine that noise loud enough to wake me up from a sound sleep, and going non-stop! What a crazy night that was!
If I get any other ideas or theories to test, I'll definitely try them out. But between you and I, I think this one may just end up being an unsolved mystery. 😆

Udon-
Glad to hear that you were able to test that theory out! To even come close to the sound it had to be something made of metal or some sort of hard object. There's really nothing else I could think of that might have been overlooked that could come close to the sound.
(I took a set of my car keys and tapped it against the window to have a better understanding of what the sound actually is.) I definitely can hear the difference between the key and my fingertip. What an odd occurrence I must say.
Hope you are able to find something that matches the sound! If not, then I guess you just have a mystery 😊

Sparkie- Thank you for the insightful comments! I made it a point to visit my parents after work today and try to replicate the noise. Here is what I found out:

-First and foremost, I observed that the glass panels of the door were very sturdy and secure. After knocking on them and pressing my hand against each one, I jiggled the door both softly and then hard to test how stable they were and they didn't budge. So we can safely say that the glass panels weren't effected by the wind.
-I tried to replicate the noise I heard that night. First I tapped the glass with my fingertip, as hard as I could, but it sounded nothing like it. I then tapped my car key against the glass and that was very similar to what I heard. I can't say for certain that on that night, whatever it was that was hitting the door was using something metal, but I know that it had to be hard.

I was raised in the house and have seen some pretty bad storms, but I've never heard the windows make a noise like that before! I am very glad to test the door though and rule out any possibilities.

Definitely an interesting story! Spooky as well. I don't believe it was a prankster or animal due to the fact they would have made other noises in their escape. In a previous comment you said that it was the glass itself being hit because of the vibrations so it couldn't have been an animal hitting another object.
With it also being so rapid like you said, it just doesn't seem plausible.
Unless there is one possibility; wind. Did you happen to notice if it was windy or not that night? Sure, it sounds weird with it stopping as you turned on the light but if you opened the door immediately, it would have stopped abruptly also due to the object being moved. That's the only thing I can think of that would replicate the sound and the situation.
Maybe you could try to replicate it with a fan or by barely wiggling the door to see if the glass is loose in the frame? I know windows do the same thing when the wind starts to blow, especially if the frame is old.
Also, welcome to YGS! 😊

sds- Hello SDS! Thanks for the welcome 😁
Unfortunately I didn't actually take the time to look out the door. I was in a rush to turn on the light and unlock the door. It was much too dark to see anything, as well.

I am both fascinated and terrified over what could have been knocking on that door. The fact that I'll never be able to find out the truth is frustrating!

Hi Udon555, welcome to YGS. I think it could not have been a prankster as you would have definitely seen him or her running away once you switched on the light. But, I just want to ask you a question. Did you happen to see the glass door before your switched on the light? Really a scary experience. What if you had opened the door without switching on the light. Well, I can't imagine. It could be worse. Thank God that it didn't happen again.

Thanks for sharing.

Regards and respects to you.

Lilady4- It baffles me to no end! I wish I knew what/who was making that awful racket that night. I do feel like something/someone was trying to let itself be known. I'm glad I didn't open the door and investigate. I wouldn't want to accidentally invite anything into the house. 😭 But really I am too big of a chicken to go and open the door after something like that happening! Haha

I did stare out into the backyard for a little while (in shock, of course). I was fully expecting to see my brother standing there. If there was someone out there, even an animal, I believe I would have seen it fleeing the scene.

That's some really freaky stuff! I guess a prankster couldn't of made such a quick getaway? Maybe it was someone or something trying to attract your attention so perhaps it could be let inside.

elfstone810- I never thought of that possibility! I do know that the tapping was terribly loud (it was making the door sort of vibrate) and it was at eye level to me, so I don't think that an animal could be up that high away from the ground. It was the glass itself that was being tapped, so I don't believe a woodpecker would have been the culprit.

Could it have been an animal making the noise? Maybe a raccoon beating a nut against something to try to crack it open? Or a woodpecker with the midnight munchies? And the light frightened it into silence.

Swimsinfire- Yes I've often wondered if it was just someone being a jerk but the circumstances are just too weird for it to have been a prankster, unfortunately. The tapping was rapid, non-stop, and it was happening even as I was facing the door getting ready to flip the light switch. It only stopped the very second the light turned on and that would leave absolutely no time for a prankster to dive away from the door to hide or run. Thank you for your input!

So, loud tapping and when the lights went on it stoped. How do you know it wasn't just someone being a jerk and pranking your window. I mean it could be a spirit, but just sayin'.
