Can It Be A Ghost?

I had published this story before on my old account and am resubmitting it. I recently moved into an upstairs apartment over a store. There is one other apartment along side mine but it's empty and has been for months. Shortly after my son and I moved here, I started hearing what sounded exactly like footsteps out on the enclosed porch. Then the loud thumps would start up. The door at the bottom of the stairs has even slammed late at night and when I go to look, nobody's there. Sometimes these noises go on for awhile and other times they stop pretty quickly. My son has heard this also and is freaked out by it.

My 3 cats react to the noises as well. These noises always happen late at night and always around the same time, which is strange! I've had the cops here several times because at first I thought maybe somebody had gotten in somehow. The police never found anything. We keep the door locked at the bottom of the staircase so nobody could have gotten onto our porch. The strange thing is, one night after I had called the police and they came to look around, I asked them to please relock the door downstairs, which they did. Right after they left, the noises started up again! Now how can you explain that?!

There's no way anyone could have been hiding out there, waiting for them to leave! I've even talked to my landlord about this to see if any of his former tenants have ever mentioned anything like this to him before and he said no. He hasn't owned this building more than a year or two, either. He couldn't have had more than a few tenants since he's owned this place.

It's a very old building and I want to try to find out about its history. Does anyone know how I could go about this? Do any of you reading this story have any suggestions as to what could be happening here?

Thanks for taking the time to read my story!

Vulcan10: Thanks for reading my story & for your comment. Your suggestions are great, I'll try those out to see if I can find out anything about this property. I know there used to be an appliance store downstairs that was there for a very long time. The store that's down there now has only been in business about 2 years. About the Ouija board, I have one but don't mess with it. I had a scary experience with one some time ago & am afraid to even touch one! Thanks again for your comment! 😊

Cosmogal926: Thanks for reading my story & for your comment. No, my landlord has done NOTHING to this apartment. It's a pretty old building & the place is falling apart due to neglect. He has only owned the property about 2 years & hasn't even tried to make any improvements to the place. But that's a whole different story! I agree with you, it could be a residual haunting, something that happened long ago & keeps replaying over & over. This may be why the activity seems to have stopped for now. Also, we didn't hear anything when we first moved in. The noises didn't start up until we had been here several months. You may have hit the nail on the head with your explanation! Thanks again! 😊

newspaper files. Try your local newspaper and check out there back files. If they're on computer (you hope) just do a search for your building address or street. Also there's probably some neighbors who have lived around there for a while who would know if something has happened. Don't go ouija what ever you do though.

Hi Ibelieve, this is very interesting. When you first moved in did the landlord make any renovations to the apartment? That could have started up some activity. It could also be that something happened during that particular time in the past and was a reoccurring haunting. Which would explain why you haven't heard anything in a while. Thanks for re-posting this story. 😊 ❤

VampireLord: Thanks for reading my story & for your comment. One of the first things I thought of was maybe an animal had gotten in here but there's no way possible. The only way onto my porch is through the door downstairs & it was closed & locked. Also, when I called the cops to come check out the noise, they found nothing. If an animal had gotten up here somehow, we would have seen it out there. It's still unexplained as of now & I haven't heard these noises in several weeks. They stopped as mysteriously as they started. 😨
