Former Skeptic's Journal 2 on 2012-03-21

It's been a long while since I posted here, and I've been keeping a journal like Miracles and Granny suggested. If you want my background, feel free to read up on my other entries. Here is a continuation of my journal entries from where I left off the last time I submitted. I included mood and time ...

Former Skeptic's Journal on 2010-10-19

I'm a 40 year old former skeptic in New Jersey who until recently had very little belief in God, ghosts, spirits, or any sort of afterlife. I was SURE of so many things. In my 1 other story I explained what changed my mind. I've become more open and aware of my surroundings. A poster on this site ga...

Former Skeptic, Now Beginning To Believe on 2010-05-11

Some background: I'm a 40 year old male teacher in central New Jersey and for 38 years I've been skeptical about the paranormal. For 38 years I haven't had a single personal paranormal experience. That all changed in 2007. My father passed in December of 2007 and about 10 days after his passing ...

To explain why I write the journal and how I write it...

1) I write it because it's a great idea and Miracles and Granny said it was a good idea... And it is.

2) I write as if I'm explaining it to somebody who has never heard of what is happening. That way I can remember he event in more detail years down the road and if anybody else reads it, they know what the heck I'm talking about.

3) I only post things that I feel are relevant or could be paranormal in nature. I don't often have things happen, but it's enough to know 'something' is here. I've included sleep paralysis just because it a complete shock to experience it. 40+ years I've never had that happen. Thank goodness I read about it here or I'd have been pretty freaked out.

4) I love the journal because I can see a pattern. March is 'the month' and another thing happened yesterday too which made me write in my journal. Based on my 2 years of keeping it for me it's March and December that get the most activity.
It's funny here because there are often times where there is not much going on at all, then suddenly in a few days there are multiple 'happenings' as I call them. I really think time is a concept that does not apply in the spirit world.

As of March 24th nothing new is happening, at least nothing I'm aware of.

Miracles and Granny... The journal was such an awesome idea. I try to be as detailed as possible now. Looking back on the full year I've been doing it, it seems like March is the most active month. Could be just a coincidence but could be important.

It's a real shame. I wound up leaving my school this year to work at a different one on the district and there is nothing interesting at all about the new school with regards to the paranormal.

I often wonder why there isn't some more funding and research into the paranormal field. Electromagnetic energy, voices, movement of objects has been reported by millions of people. Why are there not more intense studies? It would shed some serious light on some of what may lie in the afterlife. Doesn't it seem important to anyone else?

Nice story. It's refreshing to read a well written story told by an adult. Keep us posted if you experience more jokes!

The journal has been very beneficial for me. Whenever something odd happens I simply open the journal and begin typing. It's been pretty active this Sept and October for me. Very quiet in other months.

I agree, sometimes I may be too busy to notice or whatever is happening is on vacation.

It's scary when you realize just how much you don't know about things. I have a very scientific mind but lately I can't help but question what do I really "know" for sure.

Appreciate the responses. The one that really got me was the Driod Pandora app music. It was silent in my computer room at home, the phone plugged in across the room. It was plugged in for a while, maybe 40 minutes charging and then suddenly LOUD MUSIC. To say I jumped would be an understatement on jumping.

I laugh at it now, but it sure was freaky.

Do the feathers have any meaning other than just being feathers? Did your dad have a bird or something or does it have meaning to you?

Great story... Uplifting and bitter sweet.

I too am beginning to believe that there are signs all around, you just have to look.

Thanks for making me smile.

Thank you for sharing your story. I too wasn't a believer in the paranormal nor a big believer in the afterlife. Several experiences have changed my point of view. That's not an easy thing to do when you're 40!

I've received some good advice here and I'll share it. I was recently told via a thread like this one to keep a journal of any experiences and that's what I'll suggest you do as well. Keep your eyes open, your ears open, and always keep an open mind.

I think as adults we tend to see the world only 1 way. We lose the magical world we knew as children as we get older. We, in essence, lose our imagination and sense of discovery. It seems it has awakened in you as it has in me.

Just in case you haven't figured it out yet, you aren't crazy. Just thought I'd toss that out there. Take care.

A journal is a great idea. Thanks for the suggestions. Weird stuff doesn't happen often for me, but if I experience anything else, I'll write it down. I already have a small notebook set aside for it near my bed.

To the poster who remarked that my experiences were tantamount to a Demon which wants to lead me astray of God... I can say that before these experiences I didn't believe in God. Not really anyway. Now I'm a believer that there is more than likely a being which has created our universe and life.

These experiences have brought me closer to a belief in a God.

I'll never dismiss anybody's comments and we as a species don't really know for sure what lies beyond our physical lifetime. Demon? God? Another existence? Energy? Nobody knows. What I do know is that science can not explain it all for me anymore. I'll be keeping my eyes, ears, and senses open and approach every experience with a healthy dose of science, skepticism, and an all encompassing sense of wonder.

Thanks for listening.

Rainman, I don't have any trouble falling asleep, jumping or being nervous. It was just that one time that I smelled something, that was in late Dec of 07. No smells since.

A week after that incident I was trying to fix my mom's spotlights outside and I couldn't find an electrical box to stuff the outside wires in, I got frustrated and left. I had looked all over where the parts 'should' be in dad's workshop to no avail. I came back the next day not intending to work on the spotlight and I see a light shining from under his workshop door (in the garage). It was the sun shining though a window. The window has an old kitchen curtain and it was pulled a little to the side. The curtain wasn't supposed to be pulled aside. I moved the curtain closed and I saw the cabinet to the right of the window open about 1 inch. I said aloud, ok, what am I missing, and I opened the cabinet and the electrical box was right there in front. I chalked up as coincidence but part of me wants to believe he was sending me a message.

I think if this is paranormal in nature, it doesn't seem at all scary or creepy. It's almost like a cry for attention.

It's little stuff like that which makes me begin to wonder what I'm missing. Stuff that can be coincidence that maybe isn't. It's not creaking floor nor is it ghostly images or seeing stuff move, it's little stuff that just don't add up.

"You have to understand, just like God, the entire spirit world can hear your thoughts, including what you are feeling."

It's amazing you said that. When I walked past the assembly on the way toward the stairwell I thought to myself 'It must have been so awful to never see your brothers and sisters again and watch your loved ones die, I could not bear that.' and I kept walking toward the stairwell. About 4 seconds after the thoughts popped into my head is when I began to hear the sob.

You also asked my state of mind. I was not sleeping well prior to that night of the smell. I did a lot of crying and thinking over those 10 days or so. After the 10th day I began to finally accept it and it was the first night I got to bed and fell asleep right away. Thinking about it now it makes me laugh because I really needed and wanted to sleep the entire night and I was unable.

I'm still a person who somewhat skeptical of strange events but I'm paying a lot closer attention to things. I don't want to be that person who thinks every weird noise is something or every shadow is something. I think, no, I know that there is more to life that I can possibly know or imagine and that I'll probably never have all the answers I want. Still, Dad wasn't religious and believed once you die, that's it. You are part of the earth and no more. We used to have discussions about stuff like that but what's amazing is he said I may believe that there is nothing after death, but you have to say this... Before there was something, there was nothing. Who or what created the something? At one time there had to be nothing. NO rocks, NO space, no nothing. Maybe that smell was him telling me, yes, there is something past physical body's lifetime.
Well written story. I'm afraid it leaves more questions than answers. I just hope someday, after I'm gone from this earth, I can have all these questions answered. It really is frustrating not to know isn't it?

I've never seen anything like that and have had only a few experiences. I've never seen a full fledged ghost though.

Thanks for sharing.

Your son may be ultra sensitive to EMF. Check it out at

There are some rational explanations for some of his experiences. The stereo and other electronic devices can be triggered via electric spikes. The pots and pans are a mystery.

It's time to act like a detective and start to rule out what you know and what you think you know.

Start by spending a few nights in your sons room while he is on the couch. Take in a recorder, or set up a camera for the night. Do you get the same sense of dread when you are in his room? Ask a friend to stay over, preferably one who does not know the circumstances of the room.

I believe there is more to life than what can be seen and sensed. It's entirely possible your son can see and feel what others can not. It's also possible he is sick.

If you are serious about getting help then begin to try to prove or disprove his experiences. You may also want to keep up the visits to a counselor. I wish you and your family all the best. I hope it works out for you.

What an amazing story. You are an excellent writer.

If you read this, maybe try to bring a flip camera or a recording device along with you when the activity becomes increased. I think we'd love to see and hear what you are experiencing. I haven't seen much with regards to the paranormal. Just a few events that don't even resemble what you have experienced.

Please tell us more. I'm looking forward to more of your stories.

Take care, stay safe.

Crazy story. I enjoyed it. Those TPS reports are a pain! (Silly Office Space Movie Reference)

Missing stuff, you ever find any of it? Ever?

I also have had a few minor explainable experiences but yours seem more likely of something unique.

Know you are not crazy. I'm a logical person at heart and always strive to get empirical data so my suggestions are as follows:

1) Have a digital recorder handy. When you hear the beeping noise, hit record and see if the recorder picks it up.

2) Confide in your boyfriend.

3) Take some digital photos of your sink area, bathroom, etc. You never know what you'll find.

Hang in there. So far, whatever you are experiencing it doesn't seem like it wants to cause you harm. I think, if I had to guess, that if you do indeed have an entity, that it just wants some attention.

Good luck and try not to be too scared. Keep us posted.

I'm a firm believer in ruling out all possibilities first. Sleep disorder is a good possibility. Ever sleepwalk? Maybe your boy friend is slapping your when you sleep. I've known married couples to kick the crud out of each other when sleeping.:)

The camcorder idea is a good one too. Good luck. Keep us updated on how it turns out.

Could it be you have squirrels or other animals in your attic? Footsteps could be a raccoon or other larger animal?

Sprinkle some baby powder on your bookshelf in the attic. See if you see footprints of an animal or something else.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

I look at things from a scientific point of view. To make sure you are hearing what you are hearing, get a recorder and tape yourself at night. When you wake up, play it back. It could be just a dream.

Sounds scary regardless. I used to wake up in a panic sometimes as if something was crawling on me. I am certain it was just a dream in my case. In yours, I'm not sure. Good luck with your issues.
