[at] dranny and Cosmo,
This area has many different tribes. Hohokam, Hopi, Apache, Navajo, Tohono O'odam (sp), Pasqua Jaqui...
The list goes on. I'm starting with Tohono O'odam now, so take your pick.

[at] granny, yeah I came up with nothing too. I tried a couple of different key words, but the same sites keep coming up. I did learn a lot about the Houma Indian history though. LOL πŸ˜†

Because of the suggestions of Nysa and 510mot, I've been Google-ing for about an hour now LOL πŸ˜†...I haven't been very successful yet, maybe I need to find the right keywords... ❀ 😊

[at] 510mot, now you have me curious about this story. 😁 From what you recall it does sound eerily similar to what jrose's mother, and grandmother experienced. I am going to try and google it up. See if I can find anything. πŸ˜‰

[at] jrose, I have been thinking about how your grandmother mentioned "she will never forget her eyes" They say the eyes are the window to the soul, and can tell a lot about a person. Once she locked eyes with this woman she immediately knew something wasn't right. 😊

[at] Aussie,
I had that thought as well. I couldn't put it into words, as you have, but the parallel universe theory did come to mind when I came back and read it a second time.
It's funny how so many of us have been attracted to this experience.
[at] 510mot,
That is very interesting about it being part of an old Houma Indian tale. Because the area of the southwestern U.S. Has such a rich ancient cultural feel to it. There are sure to be ancient entities who's stories have been lost to time.

I always find these stories the most fascinating and it makes me wonder more about the possibility of a parallel universe that may implode or superimpose at certain points of gravity and mass allowing these types of full fleshed and metallic interactions with others who have crossed over to function fully in a world they once belonged... I was fortunate enough to the point of curiosity to experience one of these accounts and know first hand just how amazing they are... Thank you for sharing your story.

This story has kept me busy for a while as I have been all over the internet searching for an obscure Houma Indian tale about a wondering spirit. I was told about it by my grandmother over 35 years ago. Alas the ravages of time have robbed me of the specifics and it is just killing me that I can't recall. I do think that your Grandma did precisely what she should have if indeed this entity is the same one Grandma warned me about. If I remember correctly this spirit would only leave if someone left with her for the spirit world, and let's say she was a bad guest. I enjoyed this story, It was clear and went straight to the facts with no obvious embellishments. I hope to see more stories written this well. And If anyone knows the tale I am speaking of, I would sincerely appreciate hearing it again.Thanks-510 πŸ˜•

jrose: This is one of the best stories I've read in quite a while... Very mysterious, and spooky enough to give me the willies πŸ˜†...It's a puzzler, too!...

I have a theory that this woman may have been a wandering spirit...I've dealt with those before... Has your Mom or Grandma mentioned anyone else in the neighborhood at the time having a similar experience?...

Thank you for posting, I really enjoyed your account (FAVES!) 😊

[at] Argette,
I know what you mean. I feel the same way, which is why I've returned to it. Something out of place in every way shows up out of no where. In the middle of the night, no less
It's this kind of mysterious appearance that makes you wonder exactly what type of entity this is. Why was it there? What were it's intentions? And yes, "when" did it from?

Great story jrose1967! This is going right into my favorites. I do not know for sure what or who this woman was, but because your grandmother's gut instinct was to slam the door in her face says a lot. Especially since you said it was not in her nature to be like that. I am going along with the others who suggested a possible mythological creature up to no good. Thank you for sharing your story with us. 😊

Thanks for the notes. I can't think of anything off the top of my head bad that would've followed. Of, course this was 40+ years ago. The thing that always struck me was the absolute consistency of their stories over all those years. It certainly happened and it certainly spooked them. Probably a good thing it ended as it did.

Someone from another time or place who landed there and sought shelter. Something about this resonates with me, and I don't mean that in a trivial way. We'll never know, I guess, but this is certainly cause for speculation. I've probably read way too many time travel novels.

Your granny defnitly had a bad vide, that is why she closed the door in the woman's face. A good thing she did.

My first thought was "A fireplace? In the Sonoran Desert?"I mean, come on. And a fur coat? Two things you don't need or use in this part of thr country.
A lost snowbird? Maybe she was an accident victim that didn't know she had passed from this earth?
That's all I've got. But it is an interesting account just for the fact that everything about her was completely out of place.
Thank you for sharing.

A person from the past is an interesting thought. Do you know if your grandmother's house was older than the other houses in the area or if an older home had stood on the property before her house was built?

Did anything bad or challenging happen to your grandmother after the incident? In folklore such requests are usually a test. If the homeowner was kind to a stranger they received a great reward, if they were unkind they often suffered or had to struggle through a challenge that taught them empathy.

The first thing that comes to mind is someone from another time. Scary enough, but a mythological feature is even scarier. Two women and a child in the middle of the night might be attractive prey. Oh, I am so glad my mother never answered the door when those middle-of-the-night raps came...

can't tell you what it could'v been, Many mythological creatures need permission to enter into a persons home
