haha Biblio I had the same 'Phwhoah, UPVOTE! 😲' reaction to Val's observation! Glad it resonated with you, nice to think this scary as hell encounter wasn't essentially nasty.

Nice one Val! 😆

Val 😁!
THANK YOU!
I HONESTLY THINK YOU'VE CRACKED THE CASE! I was just trying to add to the collective store of accounts on here, and I was pleased that Tweed noticed the correlation of events occurring in multiple narratives, but now I can think back on this experience with a cathartic calm that there may have been a simple misunderstanding between life-experiences/eras!

The idea that I ought to be sleeping downstairs in order to do my job in the morning makes a whole lot of sense! (Well, not in the 20th or 21st centuries, but definitely in the mid-nineteenth.) That would also account for the hand-pressure emerging from my parents' bedroom door (despite the fact it was closed), as that would have been the parent's room in the Victorian era, too; it was the front bedroom, it was at the top of the staircase, etc. This would make the terrifying experience less a spectral assault and more a concerned/corrective measure. While I cannot remember what time of year this occurred, precisely, I do know it was dark outside at my bedtime, which means it was between October and March -exactly when hot stove would be necessary in the morning for a victorian household!

This experience, then, may have nothing to do with whatever presence was in the bathroom, as I don't remember the horrid feeling of dread that I used to get in that room associated with the experience at the top of the staircase. I guess we may have had two entities at that address, and one was just trying to keep things running smoothly, while the other one resented/hated us.

Absolute Best to You,
Biblio. 😉

Tweed, it had not occurred to me that many events of this type have a primary and secondary aspect. My "shoe" story and many others I am aware of definitely have this one-two sequence. Hmmmmm.

Is the first part of one event a necessary primer or trigger to experience the subsequent parts of the event or are all parts just one continuous event with multiple aspects?

If it is a primer, is it deliberate?

Thanks for the food for thought.

Just a side note... I always thought it odd that indoor plumbing was considered all kinds of bad at the start (pooping IN the house!?) when chamber pots were considered okay. Hmmmmmm.

Biblio,
At first, I didn't think I had anything to contribute to your discussion, but after reading the comments I think I might be able to offer some possibilities.
The light thing is, indeed, mystifying, but I can't help but wonder if perhaps you were being encouraged to go downstairs. Back in Victorian times, it was not unusual for the eldest boy to sleep in a tiny room downstairs in households that could not afford servants. It generally fell to him to gather wood for the fire, or do other chores quite early in the morning, and in this way he didn't disturb younger sleeping children. Perhaps this entity was only trying to establish what it believed to be the rules.
In the same vain of thought, if this entity did belong to that era, then it would have felt an indoor bathroom the height of an unhygienic disgusting habit. Especially in what was their bedroom!
Lastly, try not to be too hard on your daddy. What if he had told you at the beginning that he felt that presence too? Would you really have felt any better? Or would the reverse be true?

Ashar, thanks for reading & for your support.

Tweed, you've raised a point that I'd never paid attention to; In fact, I can't believe I didn't notice the parallels in the experiences! Often in the accounts on YGS, there's mention of having a "spooked" feeling, certainly, but it wasn't until the hands grabbed me from behind that I felt scared. My reaction was more mystification than anything else. I'd seen lightbulbs which were on begin to flicker, then burn out; I'd seen lights burn out with a metallic "pop" immediately after being turned on; but on this occasion, I was just staring in disbelief at the light which hadn't done anything even though the switch was now "off." This clearly counts as an "odd" experience preceding my paranormal one; I'm puzzled, too, as to what purpose these examples of distraction & misdirection serve.

I'd never considered the idea that it wanted to separate me from my little brother, before your comment (how self-centered is that?). That's really quite a scary thought. I'm in the middle of writing up my next major supernatural encounter, which my brother witnessed with me, but he has no belief in ghosts (Strangely, he does believe in God; I've seen/felt evidence of ghosts, but I have reservations about the almighty).

Thanks, Tweed, for giving me the opportunity to rethink the events from your perspective. It's always enlightening to see things afresh, even after writing them down and editing them. Sometimes we need to get out of our own heads to see what's in front of our faces...

Best,
Biblio.

Hey Biblio,

Sounds like really not nice things happening around that bathroom! I agree with your perception of what happened as the most likely motive, 'someone' didn't like the new bathroom. I also wondered if whoever this was wanted you to go downstairs because they wanted to communicate with or scare your brother for some reason, eek! Maybe this encounter was an attempt to separate you. (More eeks!) But I feel your reasoning about the bathroom disapproval seems far more likely.

That light thing was really trippy. Just speaking generally here, sometimes it seems like something 'odd' occurs directly before a ghostly encounter. In your case here it was the light. Something 'odd' occurring directly before something even more 'odd'. The first 'odd' thing always seems to put someone into a 'questioning' or 'confused' frame of mind. This has happened to me a few times, one being that dancer. I first thought she was my Mum sleeping on the couch, which 'confused' me, then the rest until she 'faded out' and shook the bloody cushion. Same sort of thing with Kindly's shoe encounter, they clocked the shoes and 'questioned' why/who/how which seemed to precipitate their further weirdness.
This kind of stuff reminds me of magicians employing misdirection to bring an illusion together. Similarly hypnosis using power of suggestion. I don't know where I'm going with this, but that light behaviour seemed to induce in you the framework for the rest of the interaction, which, by the way, would have FREAKED ME OUT! 😨

Let me tell you bibilo that you write so well. Its a well written account and a reader can actually visualize your house. Your experience is creapy and blood curdling. But the reason for the haunting will always be undiscovered. Many years have passed of that unlucky night. And its interesting to know that the bathroom even scared your father.

Take care and thanks for sharing. 😊 😊

Hi, Lolljo.: The neighbours we got along with best shared the short internal wall with out house: the front parlour, the living room, and the corner at the bottom of the stairs, then the same three sections on the second floor. They never mentioned anything to us about any supernatural experiences in their home. This may have been a cultural taboo, as they were Hindu and we weren't, or it could be that they were simply nice people who were unaffected by any supernatural phenomena (I think it was the latter; they were a very friendly young couple, and she was an outstanding cook). The family who lived on the other side, with the wall of one bedroom adjoining our bathroom, etc., meant well, I'm sure, but they were a bit like barnacles; once they'd latched on to us and had started talking (they never noticed that we didn't get a chance to talk) hours could pass before we'd dented their attention enough to notice you'd been trying to leave since the "conversation" began. We didn't try to find out if they'd had anything similar happen in their home, as that could open up a conversation which might last weeks...

Hey, Manafon: I'm glad you enjoyed reading this, and thanks for the support of my guesswork! I know that I hated that dark mustard color for years afterward; I like nice bright yellows and pale yellows right enough, but I'm probably biased against the mustard shade by the entity weirding me out in that bathroom. At least my parents were decorating after the shag carpeting phase had begun to phase out. (By the way, I got to visit and to hang out in multiple interesting places as a kid, but I'm rather jealous you had a lighthouse! 😁)

OCGirl, I spent years trying to convince myself I was "making it all up" or "I was being silly" as my parents told me the truth about almost everything else (sometimes over-sharing, but that's a different website). They encouraged me to learn, they'd give me whatever answers they knew, or they'd look up -or figure out- the answers to my questions using reference books they'd bought or by taking me to the library. When they told me I was being foolish, I believed them; I swear this was one of the main triggers for my OCD. I'm getting pretty annoyed with them about it now, too, and it's been a decade since Dad 'fessed up to being afraid in that bathroom. He is the kind of guy to tackle practical problems first, as he is a very hands-on Mr. Fixit type; the supernatural isn't really something he likes to think about, but that's no excuse for making me paranoid for the 5 or 6 years we lived there.

Hi Biblio, such an interesting story.

I think I would be upset finding that out after all those years, as well. Parents usually have the best of intentions and perhaps they didn't want to reinforce your fears. Given the fact that your father also felt that way, he may have thought that if we ignore it, it's not a problem.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hi Biblio--Your account really draws the reader in. I could clearly "see" your house and its occupants in my mind. It truly does seem like the spirit of an earlier resident had, as you suggested, grown tired of his/her one time bedroom being invaded by activity the original room was not designed to accommodate!

The way the unseen hands gripped you and encouraged you to go back down the stairs would seem to suggest the unseen entity was indeed that of a disapproving adult. On a side note, I remember the mustard colored fixtures that were all the rage in the late 70s--the UK and USA were apparently equally smitten 😉.

Hi Biblio, enjoyed your narrative, well written and precise without embellishment!

This isn't entirely related to your experience... But as you said you lived in a terrace (I grew up in a terrace outside Manchester) did any of your neighbours experience anything? I'm only asking as I have since found out that two houses further up from mine experienced unexplained events. Is there a possibility if there is some kind of entity it can travel through to the adjoining houses? Do you know any history from yours or adjoining houses?

Lolljo
