My guess would be that it is a Demon. Odd, I have never heard of the pencil version of calling a spirit. But 99% of the time you contact a spirit through a Ouija board or any other device like it, it is most likely a Demon trying to fool you and get inside your head to posses you. It must not have been sealed away after you were done speaking with it and now it is following you. Good move with the crosses!

Seeing people hanging. That can be really horrific. It sounds like a really powerful ghost, or a demon. Someone said poltergeist were always demon but I disagree with that.

Hmmmmmm this is very very strange because the Ouija Board is a portal for evil. And a pencil game for fun I'm not sure but maybe this ghost called charlie must be lieing about how he died. Well anyway I think this was a demon. Anyway I think that your friends saw this ghost because lots of demons or some like to sare us alone, however if were with someone they might just get half scared anyway thanks for shareing your story with us.
