Return to the ghost story The Oxford Light

I had a buddy who graduated from Miami of Ohio in '94. He used to tell this story in a true spine-tingling fashion. First, he gave the background of the lovers, the guy on the motorcycle, etc.
Then, he told about the time that he and two buddies drove out to the house. He said when they pulled in the driveway and flashed their lights, there was a black dog who got up and walked from one side of the drive way to the other, and then sat back down, but wasn't looking at them. The dog was looking down the road at something, or for something. And when they drove on down the road they saw a light that seemed to be coming toward them, and then disappeared. So they went back to the house. Again, the dog was there, in the same spot it was the first time, and it walked across the driveway like an instant replay of the first time! And, again, the light was there, seemingly coming down the road at them, until it was at the rise just in front of them, and then it vanished. So they repeated this one more time. The house, the dog, the light, everything exactly the same, like an instant replay. Except this time they sped toward the light in the car, it kept coming toward them. And soon they could make out a bike! And as they came over the rise where the light had previously disappeared, the bike and rider were visible. The rider wore a burlap sack over his head and in lightning speed, the bike came right to the car , when the bike disappeared and the rider seemed to come right at the windshield, then fly just over the roof, and it disappeared. As they turned around and got the hell out of there, an empty dress was hanging on the barbwire fence at the hairpin turn!
My story teller, with the greatest conviction, assured me that he was so traumatized that he had NEVER spoken about it to anyone. Except, of course, the eight people in that room. Gotta love it - the Oxford Ghost!

Thanks for sharing that experience! I'm highly interested in the picture you got that night.

And yeah, Like I said in the story, we thought that too. But I swear there was no cars coming that I could see when my friend did see the light. I also recall noticing headlights would turn not fade out slowly. though, I do think the red light is possibly tail lights. Some strong tail lights though, huh? So that theory is busted I think.

What I really want to do is find a spot along the side of the road to set up a camera, and try video taping it from there! A side view of that light would answer half of our questions in my opinion. Problem is, the darn light moves, and no one is ever sure where it's actually appearing out.

So, my friends and I checked it out last night around 11:30. We parked at the top of a hill facing south on the northern part of Oxford-Milford Road. After we flashed our lights and turned off the car, about 5 minutes later we saw the light in the distance, heard some kind of reving motor sound, and it was headed toward us. My friend driving freaked out, turned the car on, turned around and headed north. The light was following us, moving fast, and was pretty close. It disappeared, and we headed back south down the road.

I really don't know what to think. First of all, it was no doubt a creepy road (with deer everywhere!), but I expected it to be abandoned. It wasn't lined with houses, but it certainly isn't as deserted as I expected it to be. I'm not ruling out the possiblity that it could be paranormal (although I think the motorcycle legend has nothing to do what the light), but it could be somekind of optical illusion created by the unique landscape. Perhaps any car traveling down that road in the distance would appear to be a single light. People have mentioned red lights as well; could it possibly be tail lights pulling in or out of a driveway?

And I guess finally, on the way back down the road we did see a car pulling out of a driveway with one headlight out. Now, given the unique circumstances (time span, location, aspects of the light) about our sighting, we couldn't be 100% sure if that was what was responsible, but its pretty strong coincidence. Could it possibly be a hoax by one of the residents on the road, who wait to see flashing lights, get in a car with one headlight, travel down the road and then disappear into one of the driveways before it reaches you?

We plan on trying it again to see what happens. The next time we won't turn around, and let it get as close as possible. By the way, one of my friends got a pretty good picture of it, and once I get a hold of it, I'll put a link up for everyone to see.

Holy cow, I can't believe my story has warranted so much of a response! I guess it's a little late to be replying to a lot of you, but wow.. I'm glad so many people are interested.

And if you read this Jake, NICE job getting that picture! That's exactly the thing I saw!

Also, I'd like to point out that I have stated that there is no record of a motorcycle/suicide incident ever taking place on the road. So I agree with you Anni, the legend is bunk. I can also imagine how annoying those college students, or just anyone flashing their lights up their in general, must be! Myself included (I won’t lie, I had to turn around in a few drive ways up there before, so I’m just as bad). But in my defense, I try to be as respectful as possible. Not only that, but I’m fairly positive there IS something at work here that isn’t headlights of other cars coming over the hills. That’s fairly obvious to me, mainly because I live at the bottom of a hill in Fairfield, Ohio. One of the things I’ve always noticed is the way headlights reflect off trees or the sky as they rise over the hills. This light, somehow, is always constantly forward. I’ve seen it reflect off the ground, interesting enough.

Oh, and Winter, Oxford is a town here in Ohio! The proper terminology for what this phenomena is actually “Earth Light,” “Spook Light,” or of course, “Ghost Light.” For an extensive list of examples and stories about the subject, check out Obi-wan's Ghosts.org site on Ghostlights: http://www.ghosts.org/ghostlights/ghostlights.html

Also, I should probably point out ohioexploration.com isn't my website, it's just one of the references I used. Though, I'd love for the OES to pick me up as a member!

My best friends live right there at the 90 degree angle, and many a night I've stayed over, or left extremely late...(we swim late, have bonfires, hayrides, etc, and have often stayed up waaaay after our kids have crashed talking outside at their GATED estate), point being, the only CREEPY thing I've EVER seen is hoards of cars turning around, turning on and off their lights, trying to wander the property and area, (usually drunk high school and college students), illegally entering the driveway, even banging on the doors in the wee hours of the morning to inquire about the light, (only to be met by a very, very angry father whose kids were just awoken by the commotion in their very private, gated driveway! Seriously, I went to Miami, I've researched it, and there was no child on a bicycle killed by a motorcyclist, no forlorn lover awaiting her man on motorcycle, no jaded motorcyclist who returned from the war, and if you look closely enough, you'll see NO HOUSE EXISTED WHERE THE LEGEND SAYS IT DID...sorry to burst your bubble. You may actually have seen the intricate flash/strobe light show my friends and I have put on to freak out the students if it's been within the past five years:)

Janice... I said I was pretty sure it was accurate because I know how the quality would be pixilated on a cell phone. And also it is one single light, exactly as he showed. No one will know if it's true or not, but i've seen it several times and that is what it looks like.

Leah....go to where there is a fork in the road that turns to the right at a 90' angle. Then park in front of the "do not park" signs...lol. Turn your car into the direction you just came. Enjoy.

Obviously there is no way for me to prove the picture is real. I don't blame you for thinking it could be fake, it's grainy looking and because its at night and out in the middle of nowhere, you can see nothing else but the streetlight and the headlight. However, I did go out there, saw the light, and so I took my camera phone to take whatever type of picture I could. That was the best I could get with what I had.

I think there is a chance of this being explainable. Because its in the middle of nowhere, this could simply be cars out in the distance on the same road dipping up and down behind hills. When cars are that far away, their two lights may look like one. The red light may be taillights of cars. Again, this doesn't explain the flashing blue and red lights I saw the one time, and the fact that it happens almost every time, even very late at night when there is virtually no traffic. Just a theory though.

Hey Joe, how can you be so sure that that picture is 99.9% accurate? did you further investigate it? Yeah ok, you said that you experienced but how can you be so sure that the picture is as real as you say it is? Well, you could be right but how can you really be so sure?

wow, looks different on camera. I've never seen a photo of it, i've just witnessed it about 8 times now. i'm no professional, but my guess is that it's 99.9% accurate.

Hey Jake how's it goin? I saw your picture in that link to the website. Are you sure that isn't something you just made up? I mean I believe in the lights since Alex wrote so much about it and greatly detailed, are you sure that those pictures just doesn't have two lights in there from something else? Well, it's not my place to judge that, because I'm not a photographer, but where's the road? It was late at night? Hey if you know anymore websites about these "lights" , can you or anybody else please tell them to me? So Alex you said your website was Ohioexploration.com? well I'm going in there right now to find out for myself about these "lights" and possibly other stuff he is sharing with us in there.

I've lived in oxford my entire life and have done this quite a few times. I've seen exactly what you described about the white light bobbing up and down.

However, when I went to do this a few nights ago with 4 other people, I saw a white flash go one way and then the other really, as if losing control while turning a sharp curve. The only other person in the car who saw it was my friend that was in the passenger seat next to me. the others didn't believe us. Has anyone else seen something like that?

Hey! Its me again. So I figured out how to put this picture on the internet from my cellphone and I have the link to it below. Check it out. The bright light in the upper part of the picture is the nearby streetlight and you can see a power line running just above it. The glowing in the lower left part of the picture is my thumb I believe. The small dot in the center is the headlight coming down the road at us. This was the second time we ran the trial and, as mentioned earlier, there were no accompanying lights with it, although the headlight itself flickered red a few times. Here is the link to the picture:

Hey guys. So I saw this website and me and two of my roommates decided to check it out tonight (yeah, it's finals week but whatever). So we went out to the place (corner of oxford-milford road and earhart road), turned around on oxford-milford road at the 90 degree bend and were then facing back towards where we came from (towards oxford). We then shut off the engine and flicked the lights three times. I would say about after 15 seconds, the light appeared and began coming towards us down the road. It lasted for awhile the first time and was not a car because there was only one light. We also saw the little red light near it and one point. Also, as it dipped down between two hills, we saw the emergency lights that some people have talked about. One of the roomies didn't see them but the other one did and they were dimmer than the normal head light and disappeared when the headlight reached the top of another hill. We then turned on our engine because someone who lived nearby was pulling out into the road and the minute we did that, the headlight disappeared. We drove down to where it was and there was nothing there, no explanation. We then turned around and went back to do it again. This time there was a car coming down the road towards us and it looked totally different from the single headlight. Anyways, we flicked the lights again and after about 15 seconds, it started coming again. This time there were no flashing blue and red police car-like lights and the headlight itself seemed to be flickering yellow and red. It was weird. I even got the headlight on my cellphone camera the second time. If I figure a way to get it on the internet, i'll post it. Anyways that's my story.

I have a very similar story to yours, but mine is located in Ontario down a dark road as well. There was said to be a young man on a motor cycle one night who got into a very bad accident and died. When you go to the road...any spot on the road... and flash your lights 3 times, you see a motor cycle light come from the far end of this field and you can hear the motor cycle as well. You watch in amazement as the motor cycle makes its way out to the road and drives past you, just to dissapear into the night... I have seen this more than once and its very creepy.

glad to see more stories coming up. this is great. It truly is something not of this world...I too, have seen the red tail lights before the light came. I however have NOT seen the light come into my car, or anything. Just a theory, but maybe it tries to scare people off by entering their vehicle if they keep flashing their lights. I try not to make the spirit mad because I respect it. a group of people we ran into waiting to see it before us one night, said that the light came into the hood of the car, and the lights in the dash were flashing, and the cell phones were going crazy. So ya, I probably wouldnt want to make it mad.

I've seen this light many times in high school as well. I don't know if I would call it an "under water" effect, but there is an easy way to differ between it and a car. If you go late enough (say after midnight), there is usually fog on the road. When a car comes, it lights up all the fog as headlights normally do in foggy conditions. However, when the light comes, it shines straight on your windshield but does not illuminate any fog on the road. It is truly an odd experience!

Well I am one that has been out to the ghost several times, for some reason when I was younger that was what we did. My group of friends have been out there at least 20 times during 93 and 97. Each time we saw the ghost, and had other different experiences.

When I first started going out there, the shack was not burnt down, it was a small wooden, shack or maybe a home. It burned down sometime in the 95 or 96 time frame if I remember correctly. There is nothing "mysterious" about it burning down. As for the time frame, it does not need to be 10pm. I have seen it at midnight, 2am and other random times at night. There has also been times when the road was barrcaded by the police. Some say this was the anniversary of the accident, but I think it might have been something else like road construction or road paving.

One time we took a bunch of us to try and prove it was some kids with a flashlight. We seperated into two groups one on the "hill" with a camera and another in the call to summon it. The weird thing is when it came, the light appeared between us and was white from both sides. We caught it all on tape, however I am not sure who ended up with the tape over the years.

Another time we decided to try and chase down the ghost, however we chickened out right before the 4 way intersection, and it was a good thing too. Right as we stopped at the intersection a truck blazed through. After the truck past the light disapeared. If we follwed it through the intersection we would have most likely been hit. Was almost like it was baiting us on that night.

Another time ended with my driver side window imploding immediatley as the light appeared. The police said it was the farmer who owns the farm shooting his shootgun at us. The intresting thing is my friend in the backseat swore he saw a black shadow that blocked the moon (he was on the right side of the car, the left window was the one that was shattered......

The story goes on and on, and I know my friends brother who started going after me and my friend out grew the experience has had simular experiences as well. He even mentioned it was covered in an episode of the old show Unsolved Mystories.

If you want to pass more stories about the "Ghost", let me know how to reach you. I would be intrested to see the video, if you decide to upload it to YouTube or something similar. Would love to see the light again, especially the "underwater" affect it has inside the car. Note. I am one of superstitions, so remember that after you summon the ghost, do not flash your lights 3 moree times.

I grew up in Richmomd, IN (I now live in Indy) and I used to go out there many times and have witnessed this every time. Has anyone else ever noticed what appears to be red taillights off in the distance before the light actually appears? Anyway I have told my wife about this several times much to her disbelief and I would love to sho her. Since it has been quite some time since I have been there can someone please tell me where "the spot" to park is?

Wow.....I was the third person with Joe and Jessica......It was a bright light coming down the road and just fading out. What was amazing was that the hills were behind it, so it couldnt have been a motercycle turning into a driveway. Plus, what are the chances that 3 motercycles would come down a country road in the span of 10 or 15 minutes?

again, three times tonight. it came. 10/17/2006 around 11:30pm. It took it longer to come out tonight, but came on a dime after each 3 repeated flashes. Me, jessica, and now a third person matt came out to see it. He should be posting up to tell us what he saw as well. It turned slightly red tonight, alex have you seen that?

We went with a couple friends lastnight on Friday 13th of October. I told them before we got there "don't be surprised if I don't see it, I have never really seen anything that has conviced me that it was haunted" And very much to my surprise I have finally seen a very convincing ghost. I was totally amazed!!

I would like to say that i believe the story to be true. ME and another student from miami went to investigate last night, 10/11/2006. We flashed our lights 3 times, and the light came shortly, with exact descriptions as you so portrayed. At first the light is bright, and looks like another car, then it fades out just as it comes to the front of the car. There is no explanation for this, and I TOO was looking for anything to reflect, nothing. The hills would block the light anyways....it has to be real. I believe what i saw until the day i die, as well as the other person with me. contact me please at mojoe3838 [at] yahoo.com so we can investigate this further.
