My opinion, I think it may be an elemental. Some can be unpleasant, others are easy enough to call neighbors. If your visitor hasn't caused any trouble by now, I don't think he will start. This one seems friendly enough.
Elementals come in various shapes and sizes, and some are a little strange-looking by human standards. If you choose to speak to him, just be respectful. He was on that land long before you arrived, after all. I imagine he'll still be there long after you've moved away.
