newhunter,
Of course you are welcome to join in the discussion and weigh in with your opinions/ ideas. When it comes to the paranormal, there's no real 'experts', or hard and fast rules - we can only go by what seems the 'norm' by what others and ourselves have experienced.
What I had meant is prior to the spirit first slamming of doors, I did not feel its presence. Not in any of my usual ways at least. Although the air did feel a bit staticy to me, it didn't feel like 'abnormal' static. (Geeze, I hope that makes some sense.) Now, after the bedroom door slamming on us, I admit to being 'edgy',and scared. When the room chilled, I felt somewhat 'sick', but I honestly can't say whether that was just nerves or the 'sensing' of it.
It wasn't the next day but around a month (three or four weeks) later that I went back, and yes, the kitchen was in disarray.

Val I know your question was asked of Rook but if may id like to throw my thoughts into the mix. I am assuming that this was in fact a spirit as that's what I believe, and I would believe if the spirit had enough energy that it could "cloak" itself as you say. I would assume however that the chilling of the room temperature, if I read it right, prior to the speaking would have been your way of sensing the spirit. If you are referring to the feeling of its energy then I simply was along a different thought line. But the bottom line is I do believe that it could hide its energy if strong enough.

The only thing I wonder is after the verbal altercation with this spirit did you actually feel the energy of it around you? You don't really say in the story and I'm not trying to drag up feelings but based of what you and Rook were discussing it is kind of imperative to know.

Also you said you went back the next day if I remember correctly, was the kitchen trashed when you did?

Dearest Rook,
Would be a darn boring discussion if no one asked any questions, wouldn't it? Besides, isn't this what we do? Try and sift through and find mundane 'normal' explanations before saying 'paranormal'?
As I said, we did see the closet door close real slowly. Like someone was deliberately closing it for our benefit. But his bedroom door was behind us - so didn't see it close, only heard the slam, and of course after we spun around, saw it was closed.
I know when we heard the voice it sounded like inches from us. An in your face type thing if you follow. Hank had said he had heard it several times before while watching TV, so that would make it the same room. Whether he ever heard it in another room, I honestly don't know, I never thought to ask. But the sound of the slamming doors - those came from different directions. Following your thought, it would have taken several different speakers placed in various areas, at various heights, I'd think to produce the right effect. I do know the sounds from the kitchen were definitely from that vicinity, and his bedroom was situated upstairs.

Maybe there is something you can help me answer, because you've had a lot of experiences too. As you 'know' from things I've said, I've either seen or sensed spirits before, I've heard them speak, or 'felt' their emotions. What I'm trying to say, is I 'knew' they were there before they actually did anything. But this time there was no forewarning, for lack of a better term. Why do you think that was? Enricka was of the opinion that it didn't want me to so it kind of cloaked itself from me. Does that make sense to you?

Val...

I don't know if the KKK themselves would have been involved... Thier tactics, as you mentioned, were always a bit more visual.

As far as the haunting goes... I was wondering about voice anb the sound of slamming doors... Did Hank... Or you during your visit to the townhome see a door moving after hearing it slam?

The voice... Was it only heard in one room? Was this the same room the. Slamming doors were heard from? If so it could have been done via hidden speakers...

You actually experienced some of this haunting... I am not sugesting it did not happen... But as I read this these thoughts popped into my head and I felt I had to ask.

Rook

Rook,
No offence taken at all, I understand you are just trying to help me put this mystery to bed, as it were. I do know that Illinois does have a KKK chapter, so what you suggest is a feasibility, I guess. I know that they did talk of selling the place, but whether it sold or not I don't know.
I never met any of his neighbors (I'd only been to his place twice, this time and once after). But it was a predominately white area, if that helps.
As for being religious - I know he took his Mom to church. But whether that was for her or himself, I'm not real sure. I know he believed in God. And the times that his mother INSISTED that he bring me to dinner (because 'young folk just don't eat proper on their own') they did say Grace.
I don't think he was superstitious, unless you want to count things like saying 'knock wood', or tossing spilt salt over the shoulder?

Could it have been a man-made 'haunting'? Now, that's a tough question, and a darn good one. Hank never complained about being hassled about living there, but then I guess it's possible he just never mentioned it, at least not to me or around me that I remember, but I think that would have stuck with me. If, I'm following your chain of thought correctly, you're talking about something like in that old movie "Gas Light", right? A living being creating the illusion of a haunting? Honestly, that idea had never entered my head. It's an intriguing notion. But, I don't see how it could have been done. Of course, there was no real investigation into his death, it just looked like an accidental fall, so no one would have been looking for any evidence of such a thing being done. And, I know I didn't see anything that made me think in that line. But that long ago, would I have even known what I was looking for? I seriously doubt it, not unless it was out in plain view or I was looking for it (assuming I would know what 'it' was), never mind the fact I was terrified and we know how that can be.
Rook, straight up, do you really think the KKK would resort to something, that to me, seems complicated to carry out, to be rid of one guy? I do know of one family (way farther south in IL.) where they burnt a cross on their lawn and threatened physical harm if they didn't leave. But to contrive a haunting? I don't know...
If you think you're on to something, and have other questions that could maybe solidify your idea, please ask. I'd be especially interested on how you think it could have been done. Honestly, it just boggles my mind to think of someone resorting to something like that.

Theres something that isn't sitting right with me... Let me say this...

A 3 to 4 month time period is pretty quick for a haunting to escalate to the kind of level that you describe happening. So I will ask a few questions...

What was done with the property after 'Hanks' passing?

Do you know anything about the Landlord... Or if 'Hank' owned the townhome... About his neighbors?

Is there ANY chance this Haunting could have been 'manmade' in a effort to get 'Hank' to move out or sell the property?

Was 'Hank' religious or superstisious (sp?) in anyway?

This experience is so sad and I do not mean to sound like a nay sayer but something about it has got me thinking about those questions I have asked... And 30 years ago the KKK was a whole heck of a lot more orginized and wide spread...

Thanks for putting up with my questions... I mean no offence.

Respectfully,

Rook

Hi silent,
Yes, this happened in Illinois. There's a lot of 'transplanted' Southerners here. I know there's a KKK chapter here. Primarily located in southern part of the state.
Hate doesn't know any boundaries. I can still remember some of the race riots of the 60's were really bad.

Valkri Cry--what a sad ending to your story. I'm sure it doesn't mean much, but I am sorry for the loss of such a good friend. I can't really tell from the story/ comments whereabouts Hank's house was located... Maybe Illinois if I read the one comment correctly & it was accurate? Either way, I wonder what a racist old-school southerner would be doing there haunting his townhouse.

I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to ball all of you who've asked if I've ever felt Hank's presence, all together in one reply. Just seems rather redundant to address you all individually with the same answer.
The short answer is yes, there's been a few times when I thought I felt him. I'm not sure how interesting of a read it would make, and even if I submitted it there's no guarantee that it would be published. But, since ifi and notjust, seem to be of the mind, that it would be "wasted in the comments" (You guys crack me up, you know that? 😆) I'll try to get it written and submitted asap. No promise, but maybe even tonight, and if, for what-ever reason it's rejected, I'll come back and post it in comments. Deal?

Arwen, I do hope your friend did not pass?

Wish-Not, actually I was thinking more along the lines of Hank giving that big blankity-blank a good what for. Now, that they are on even footing so to speak. Although Hank had (has?) a big heart, he never could abide a bully. And, when you boil it down, folks who coerce others to get their own way, are really just bullies. In my head, I can just hear him saying, "So you think scaring people is fun, do you now? Scare THIS."

I'm sorry for your loss. As I was reading this, it was like a horror movi; I hope you can find some answers about the mystery surrounding the house and the tragic death of Hank. Wherever he is, I hope he's in peace. It seems the spirit in that house intends to harm Hank, plus that spirit has race issues. My guess is, he was a former elite type of person who has had grudges, his house destroyed and rebuilt and to this day his spirit remains? I don't know, but it sounds like it. I'm assuming the spirit is male though. Anyhow, I just wish Hank will give you some clues. 😐

I love reading your stories. I agree with everyone Hank seems to be a good guy and a great friend. Sorry for your loss. But I think he is in peace now. It is shocking to find out that a friend of yours died. It happened to me before and until now I am puzzled why and how. The spirit in the house of your friend might be very bad. And you have mentioned that your fear might be added to his strength, they say ghosts feed in your fear. If that happens to me I might be scared too. That will be a natural reaction. But you shouldn't think that it's your fault or you have anything to do with it. You have lent a helping hand already by going to his place knowing the fact that it is haunted but there are things that are beyond our control. You have actually exerted your effort to maximize your resources. You might be right, that spirit might have issues with races or ethnicity and that's the old way of thinking- well I am not a fan of discrimination. I have lots of friends in other countries white, black etc. And race is never an issue to us. As long as we care for each other that's all that matters. Just a question and hope you don't mind me asking, did Hank ever let his presence be felt by you after his passing or these past years? I hope you won't find this offensive, it is okay if you won't answer this. I do not have any intention to offend anyone. I am just curious. Thanks for sharing and have a good one! And by the way, I love/ would love to hang out with people older than me, I feel so secured and I know there are lots to learn from them as they are more experienced than me. Best practices are usually given by older people.:)

It probably stings more because I just found out my friend died yesterday too but I digress. Good morning val, Concerning your question, are you asking if the racist entity would be haunting Hank? I would guess IF Hank stayed that would be a possibility. I have read many stories of Mean/Bossy entities controlling weak/timid spirits.

I wonder if the Mean SOB from "The Big One" might have intimidated the playful one from my story. I believe you mentioned there might have been two different ones involved at that location.

A good question for thought. I'll be interested in the others opinions.

Ari - I don't think you said anything disrespectful at all. I really do think that more folks literally die of fright, than at the hands of some angry spirit. I guess, what really bothers me is that voice made it personal to Hank, and seem so racially motivated. I can't help but wonder if any whites that had lived there experienced any type of haunting as well, you know?
Even among the living, if you say to someone, "I'll kill you" and that person happens to be killed, you're going to be a prime suspect. I can't help but add one and one, and wonder...
You do know, that after your gone, you are required to come post about it, right? 😆

Rook, I totally agree. Fear, in and of itself, could cause a person's death.
Hank had only lived there two or three months, I believe. I know the voice was a rather recent development, and from things he had said I gathered the other stuff had intensified over time.
I don't know... Do you think some spirits have an agenda when it comes to hauntings? I mean, like it sits there and thinks, "Ok, let's see if a few parlor tricks will make him run," and just builds from there? Or is the manifestation, based only on its growth of energy?

Dear Val,
I would like to agree with Rook's chain of thought.
I find it very reasonable and acceptable.
Since nothing can compensate for the loss of your dear friend, who from your description was a very genial yet gentle guy, you might also want to accept it to soothe your heart.
You know I am saying all this because I am genuinely distressed and saddened by the end.

Its sad when something like this happens to someone we know and I am sorry for your friends passing.

I must admit I agree with those who say spirits or entities very rarely have the strength to push or throw someone around... However if motivated by fear there is a chance this spirit 'caused' your friends death if he paniced and ran from this 'thing' manifesting then misjudgeing or misstepping on the stairs... I guess you can see my chain of thought.

Did your friend ever tell you when the haunting started? Was it from day one of moving into the home... Or did it start after he had lived there for awhile?

Respectfully,

Rook

Katie, most of the time a spirit doesn't hurt the living. At least I don't believe so. One with the kind of energy I encountered is actually pretty rare, from what I understand. If not for the voice, I would have thought poltergeist. Which means 'noisy ghost', and even they aren't known to seriously harm people. Maybe slap, scratch, or pull hair on the high end of the spectrum. Even those things are rare. They basically just like to bang doors, and throw small things around.
No, I believe that over all spirits don't go around killing people. Hope that makes you feel better.

I am so sorry for what happened to your friend: (I hope you do know that it had nothing to do with you.

If the house was built in the 1920's and 60's, that could lend a clue as to what sort of person that was. That era for white supremacy was the highest.

My grandmother is a part of the people who still believe the races should not mix. It has always seemed stupid to me, as well. I've never understood how people can be that way and I grew up around it (and only an hour from what once was the KKK headquarters). My grandmother used to try to warn my sister and I of the dangers of marrying someone who was not white:/

Thanks, bgp. I think, I'll share one of Hank's horrible jokes with you:
The set up - I was sitting at the bar, a bit miffed that the girlfriend who was suppose to meet me there was apparently a no show, and rather unsuccessfully trying to get a slime-ball to bugger off. The bartender starts telling him, "Hey,buddy, she says no, it's no". Hank walks up, and addresses the bartender by name asking for another beer. He just LOOKS at the slime-ball and the guy practically evaporates. 😆 Dave (bartender) introduces us, with a reassuring of "Hank's safe."
Hank sat down on the stool next to me, and says to me, "I never drink alone." (Ready for it?) "The bartender's always here." Groan.
Hope that made you giggle.

From the way it said the 'N' word, I'm guessing it was from the deep south. The I was like a long e, and it ended in an 'ah' sound, not er or ar. I don't think that falls into any established time frame, does it?

Wow Val, that was one emotional account! 😊 ❤ 😢 I wanted to add an angry one but was limited in my emoticons.

You've got a good heart and was going to go the extra 10 miles to help this gentle giant. It didn't sound like you added anything to the strength of this evilness. It seemed intent on doing something with our without you.

You done good Val. Thank you for sharing.

newhunter - actually, in retrospect, it was probably very foolish of me to mouth off like that. Basically, as I didn't know what/whom I was dealing with, nor the extent of its capabilities. But, I was very young, and even though I was somewhat experienced it was out of my depth. I shouldn't have allowed my anger to get the better of me like that, it probably just angered it more. Instead, we should have just left and gotten the help FIRST. Oh, yeah, I've an entire list of "I shoulda-woulda-couldas" on how it was handled by me.

val- Guess one doesn't know the time period the entity was from. Sadly, one can find that type of mind set now days. Great story though val

Wish-Not, I agree, that particular entity definitely had issues. Enrika did suggest once, that the fact that I'm white may have escalated its anger. There's still a fraction that maintains the races shouldn't mix, not even as friends. Especially when one of them is female. I don't know - anger like that just seems so - stupid to me.

Val I am also sorry at the loss of a good friend but may I say this was a very good story... Minus the ending. I have never had such a clear interaction with anything supernatural but rest assured id have hauled my butt out instantly, I would not have had the guts to smart off back to a spirit seemingly so evil.

Oh Val- You had me grinning at the beginning but my heart dropped with the ending. I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend. One will never know how or who/what caused that to happen. Obviously that entity had serious intentions.

Thanks for this share. Going to my favorites.
