Red Light, Big Fright

I experienced this whilst staying at my Aunt's house in Devon. I did some research into the house and it was built around the 16th century and the owner of the house died in one of the upstairs rooms, the cause of death wasn't recorded in the house's documents and which upstairs room is still unknown.

It was Christmas time so my Aunt's family invited my mother and me round for about a week. I was given a room upstairs which was fairly big so there were two beds, one for me and one for my mother.

It had gotten pretty late and we were getting a little bit bored of playing twister all evening so everybody decided to call it a day and go to bed. It was roughly midnight when I fell asleep, however after all of the sherry I drank, I was in and out of sleep constantly until about 3am. I was awake at this particular moment, just lying there looking at the bright red stand-by light on the telly in the corner of the room (the only source of light in the room) when it started going fuzzy as if something thin and translucent had passed over it. Only then did I see the outline of a tall figure (maybe something like 6ft) Walking from one side of the room to the other, the figure was doing this repeatedly - I was petrified; I hid underneath the duvet for a while and I gained just enough courage to peek over the top. I saw the figure slowly glide between the two beds and lean right over me so being a coward I flung the duvet over my head. The air felt as if it were getting slightly colder even under the thick duvet - I knew what was happening because I love watching those ghost hunting programmes and they explain that when a ghost is close to you, the air around feels cold. I kept my head under the duvet until morning.

I was at the breakfast table and asked my uncle about the room I had spent the night in. He told me that whenever he or anybody else stayed in that room, they felt cold and strange. Which explains a lot.

I have had a couple of experiences with paranormal beings - I've wondered if this is because I'm interested in them. I absolutely love ghost stories and films and love to Google the most haunted places on Earth. Does this mean that ghosts or any other entities are attracted to me? The ghost didn't bother with my mother, only me. I'm very worried that things like this will happen more often simply because I'm a big believer and find it all fascinating.

Thanks for reading! (Sorry about the corny title)

i_am_unknown: Is there a site or some other published work that you can make reference to that substantiates your claim that ghosts are more attracted to those with negative energy, or is that your personal opinion?...I've never heard that claim 😊

ghosts are more attracted to someone with negative energy, someone unique from others. Liking paranormal activities have nothing to do with seeing them but the key word is what we are capable of seeing, sensing, hearing, etc. Not everyone can see ghosts but they will let you know they're there

I can understand why you might believe that the sherry I drank would have caused my eyes to play tricks on them although there was a death in one of the upstairs rooms and what my uncle explained to me is more proof that I was not 'seeing things'

I wish you were brave enough to talk to the ghost and the story you wrote will be totally different.

I don't believe that just because you're interested in the paranormal you are more likely to see ghosts so it's not because you like to research and know more about them. I also agree with Nysa about them noticing when someone notices them which is probably the reason it leaned over you and not your mum. Do you maybe think that the room you stayed in could be somehow connected with the death in that house?

Peace

It's not so much that ghosts are afraid of light, as it is that it's difficult to see them in full light- at times.
It's when it's darker, and our eyes are attuned/dilated to low light conditions that we begin to see a few things that may very well have been otherwise in plain sight.

This story reminds me of one of the stories I have read somewhere in the net. I'm not sure if it was either in Malaysia or Indonesia but it was somewhere in SE Asia. The only difference is the Red light was the VHS clock and the apparition was a shadow of a Lady. Its weird how apparitions love blocking the light. And a question come to mind: They're afraid of the light but at the same time like blocking the light?

You didn't give your story in detail, although I can tell you that I do love ghost stories, too and I like investigating but when it comes to dark shadows I will tell you that this has something to do with the house. Spirits are attracted to people with low energy levels and people that have no mighty support in they'r life. You probably watch a lot of documentary videos and paranormal investigations and you desired to have a paranormal experience yourself. If the house (the room) is dark and cold and there's no sun getting in ever since your uncle's room isn't there, probably this room was without an owner for a long time and it must have gotten like that because of it.But,I know that when somewone is asking and looking for things he/she souldn't then those things can happen. I'm sure at least once inside you you thought about this house as a possible fun paranormal night, this could have happened aswell just from your desire and then the littlest things you heard or saw your mind from your desire to experience the paranormal made them big. You need to find your mighty support, your place to go when you're scared, the source of your power in your life. In situations like this you can try to calm yourself down by ignoring the sounds, count to 3 with closed eyes and before you open your eyes on 3 say "Vanish". I can't do anything else for you, take care. Thanks for sharing. ❤

PacrotPig104,
I wouldn't say that spirits are attracted to someone because that someone is fascinated by them. It isn't as simple as that, at least from what we can tell so far. However, most will agree that if you can see them, they become aware of that fact, and once it has been established that you possess this ability, you become like a light in the darkness for them.
There are many who possess this ability who wish they did not. If you read enough of these experiences you you will find that there is no standard when it comes to who does and who does not have the ability to see and/or communicate with spirits/ghosts. I would say it's the luck of the draw.
As for the experience you had at your aunt's house, now that may hold more of an answer than I could ever hope to provide. You state that you saw this entity on a night you also reported this statement to be true
"after all of the sherry I drank, I was in and out of sleep constantly until about 3am".
This is your hurdle. I cannot make a judgement call either way. But I will say this; if you want to be absolutely certain in your heart of hearts, hold off on that judgement call until you have had another experience without the possibility of it being enhanced in any way.

Thank you for sharing,
Jav

I don't think that interest in ghosts can attract them to you. We have no reason to believe that being a disembodied spirit confers the ability to read minds - in fact many accounts suggest that spirits are as confused about what we are thinking as we are about what they are doing - which they would need to do to be attracted to you. It does though seem quite plausible that that interest can make you more susceptible to seeing ghosts that are present. And many theorize that they notice when we notice them. The flipside of that is the danger of that interest making us see "ghosts in gowns" as they say. That is, to think every slight anomaly is a ghost.
