Multiple Strange Occurrences In Our Home

Hey my name is Kenzie, and I am from Alabama. For the past 6-7 months things have been happening at our home.

First off I would like to tell about the night my grandmother heard a strange noise. She was visiting, and while in the bathroom, she heard a strange noise coming from the vent in the ceiling. Let me just say she is probably one of the biggest skeptics I know of. According to her she heard something that sounded exactly like a hyena laughing. Needless to say, there are no hyenas here. I asked if maybe she thought it was coyotes yipping and she said no, she knows what they sound like. I did some research and found nothing other than hyenas making this noise. So this creeped me out.

Occurrence #2: When I go in the backyard, day or night, I always hear what sounds like something huge moving around in the woods. Sometimes it sounds like something striking a tree with something hollow. A house burned down years ago in those woods, so I do not know if there's any relation. My dog recently has started barking all the time at night, and its unusual for her because she usually just barks at people she does not know.

Occurrence #3: this happened twice. One of those times was about a month ago. It was early in the morning. Maybe 2-3 a.m. I woke up because I felt 3 pats on my upper shoulder. Like what you would feel if someone were comforting you. I was facing the wall, my husband was turned facing the other way, and I asked immediately, "Why did you pat me?" He was asleep. He has done this before so I assumed it was him.

Occurrence #4: Once, I came home, and my cat and my dog were nowhere in sight. It was extremely odd, especially for my dog because every single time we come home she is at the door, tail wagging, my cat next to her. We called for them. Nowhere to be found. My dog was behind the dryer, and refused to come out. Her tail wasn't wagging. I found my cat under an end table and he wouldn't let me touch him. I've had this cat since he was born, he's not shy towards me. Every time I reached for him he would back away. I finally picked him up, and I swear the cat was so stiff it almost felt like rigor mortis. This hasn't happened again.

Occurrence #5: In our smaller bathroom, we have a hook lock that is used instead of a lock on the door knob. A lot of times, the hook part would just literally fling out of the loop, unlocking the door, and it opening. We blamed it on drafts, but that apparently was not the case. I tested this theory by locking it and having hubby push the door from the outside. It didn't budge. He pushed even harder. Never unlocked. I've watched it happen once, and I never saw it again, but it did keep happening. That lock is removed.

Things like clothes, blankets, bags, or stuffed animals that have been sitting for weeks or even longer randomly fall, and I doubt it is from "settling".

One time I thought I heard my cat jump off the counter in the kitchen, but he was in my floor, asleep. Sometimes I hear things at my bedroom window. My TV will randomly cut completely off, no timers set. My cat will sit and stare into the hallway or kitchen.

We have seen a weird, black, huge, odd figure at the end of our driveway, it's unlike any animal I have ever saw. It was on all fours.

That about sums up the things that happened here.

It sounds like an actual animal to me. One question that I have is how were you able to accurately research a sound that your grandmother heard but that you did not?

Also we live about 2 minutes from 3 giant Indian mounds, and there's also been some civil war stuff around here.

I don't think it was a bear. I don't really know how to describe it. It's hair looked like a pigs. But there's no way it was a pig. I do not think it had hooves, and it was way too big. Honestly I've considered big foot. But it's nothing like what people describe in other stories. I couldn't see it's face because it was turned around facing the woods. I just stood still. I was on my way to get the mail. It just walked back in the woods, and that's the last I ever saw of it.
And Tweed, It does sound like maybe a child. I had a best friend that lived next door to me (his parents are still there) about 100 yards away. We were really close and he was such a prankster and a joker. He was 17 when he died due to full cardiac arrest. He died suddenly one day while at football practice. No one knew he had heart issues, he seemed just fine. Full of energy, always laughing, just a happy guy. I don't know why he'd still be here though. I do have a stuffed animal (a valentine one) from off of his bed that I was given. He had it on his bed the day he passed. For a while he visited my dreams. And I kept telling him things that were happening since he had been gone. He told me he knew about all of it.

It's gotta be something pretty bad if your animals are that terrified of it. A big, huge black shadow on all fours at the end of the driveway? I would ask you if you've considered Bigfoot but I doubt that could be it. It may be a really big hellhound- but for your sake I hope it's not.

kletson117 - I'm just going to go in order of your occurrences.

1. I can't, off the top of my head, think of anything normal that sounds like a hyena, so I have no suggestions for this one.

2. There could be multiple non-paranormal reasons for the sounds you hear. One of which could be a limb falling and striking the tree on the way down or it could be a traveling sound especially during the daytime when construction, home repair, or anything as simple as using a hammer could be heard over distance.

3. This one is probably going to sound ridiculous, I'm sure, but could it something physical (other than a ghost tapping you) that is causing that sensation? I know sometimes my neck feels like it's being flicked but I take it to be a physical reason rather than paranormal.

4. When I first read about your animals' reaction, the thought that came to my mind was an intruder trying to get into your home 😕 Just another possibility. (I'd rather it be a ghost than a real person doing a B & E.)

5. The lock, well I can't say anything about this since I'm dealing with door issues of my own that just cannot be explained 😆

Unfortunately stacks of things can fall after being in the same position for awhile. Someone (human or animal) walking by lightly, without even realizing it, brushes up against the stack or whatever the items are sitting on. Again, just another possibility.

As for the cat, also dealing with that same situation myself. Can't offer anything normal for that. But cats do stare at what we think may be nothing, or even worse, something we can't see. It could be a small bug, ant, or I believe they can be in deep thought and stare into nothing just like humans do.

Without more of a description, it is hard to have a glimmer of an idea what this black form you see could be. I'm still going with animal, although what kind I have no idea. I also agree with Tweed's bear thought.

Thanks for submitting your story. I'm sure there will be other members with helpful advice and/or ideas

Anyway, just wanted to offer you a few 😊

Kletson, wow what a variety of experiences you guys have been having.

Having your pets afraid like that is cause for concern in my opinion. Animals are more tuned into paranormal goings on than us. I believe animals are even familiar to sensing paranormal activity and don't even fear it. But when they do fear it, it's for a very good reason.

Your best bet would be to cleanse your property with any ritual you feel comfortable with. I like to see the good in ghosts but having your pets scared is pretty much a deal breaker. You could ask it not to scare your pets and see if this helps.

I was going to suggest a child ghost based on the sort of things you described but that large black mass destroys that theory.
Unless the black mass was unrelated. Could it have been a bear you saw? Not a ghost but an actual bear? (Just trying to cover all bases, I'd hate for there to be one roaming the streets at night!)

One thing which might not be paranormal are the sounds you hear outside. This could also let any ghost off the hook for any wrong doing.
The hollow strike sound could be either a branch which is about to fall. Wood often cracks days or weeks prior to falling.
Or it could, you'll never believe it, be an owl. Owls have a loud cracking sound which is a mystery. Both in how they make the sound and why. I know barn owls make this sound, not sure about other species. Also you're unlikely to see one and most people are unaware they live with them. Their cracking sound is like that of wood cracking in a fire or a large stick snapping. It's quite a loud sound and can carry some distance.
We have barn owl nesting boxes in the yard and those fellas make hollow cracking noises pretty much all night.
The strange noise in your bathroom vent could also be a barn owl who'd busted into the roof looking for a new home, saw your grandmother through the vent and told her off.
We've had exactly the same thing happen. Trust me barn owls really really DON'T sound like birds, they have a seemingly endless variety of very unique sounds and all of them sound like other animals. They even growl and can sound like large wild cats, I swear I'm not making this up!

So if the owl theory turns out to be true your ghost might not be harmful after all. As pets would be scared of any owl scolding at them from a vent.
This is only an *if* suggestion though.
Running with the owl theory we're left with tapping you on the shoulder, moving clothes, toys and unlocking the bathroom door. Which all seem like something a child would do.

Then there's the large black figure. Now I'm totally clueless. Was this solid or opaque, could you tell from your angle? Also what did it do, if anything? Did you see it appear or disappear?
