Visits From An Old Lady

This happened in the highlands of Scotland when I was 33 years old. I am now 58. I have never believed in ghosts and when anyone spoke of them, I tended to shut off my hearing, until this happened.

I had rented a cottage halfway up a mountain road. It was isolated, although close to the road. It was three adjoined cottages and had previously been a country school, built in the 1800s. I loved it there.

I had the middle section, which was the biggest of the three, although had only one bedroom. I set about making it a home and looked forward to coming home from work in the evening, lighting the fire and friends would drop by quite often.

I had been living there about three months when a young man turned up at my door. We shared a mutual friend. He only stayed a minute and informed me that he had been the previous tenant. He left shortly afterwards and I wondered why he had taken the trouble to visit when he had stayed such a short time.

A few weeks after moving in, I had gone to bed and woke up sensing someone in the house. I was diligent about locking the door and windows, but lay still listening. I turned in bed and as I opened my eyes, I could see someone standing right next to the bed. She wore a black floral skirt that went to her ankles and was standing quite still. The light that illuminated the car park to the rear of the cottages afforded good light, but I slid my hand up the wall and turned the main light on. She did not disappear, but stood gazing out of the window. I have to tell you, I was terrified! The door was right next to my bed where she stood, so escape was not an option. I covered my head with the quilt and I either passed out, or fell asleep, but I woke a few hours later. The light was still on and the house was quiet.

A few weeks later, I met the young man who had come to visit me. He asked how I was getting on living in the cottage. I said "Fine", but then asked why he had moved out. "Because I kept waking up and finding a grandma next to me!"

We got some paper and pens from the waitress and we both wrote down how she was dressed and exchanged notes when we were done. Her clothes, hairstyle and where she stood were almost word for word.

I cannot explain this sighting, however it has made me more accepting of peoples "ghost" stories and overnight, I became a believer!

Highland538, thanks for sharing a great story. We always try to debunk for physical causes. The consistency between the descriptions written by you and the former tenant support your idea of it being a ghost. But could there have been car lights that cast some sort of shadow that not only you saw, but that he saw on many occasions? Related weather conditions?

And I ask, as Vonboekmann did about subsequent sightings by you. I also wonder about the history of the location and other prior tenants.

Great story. Thanks for sharing. I, too, have spent the night under my covers. 😊

What a lovely account and thankyou for sharing. Did you see the lady more than once during your stay? Were you able to investigate the history of the premisis? I too would have hidden under my quilt.
Regards J.
