Hello Mrs Rizzo2429,

Thanks for popping by. What has your mum tried to do to stop the craziness with the TV doing what it wants on its own?

I've tried as much as I can, as you can see if you read the comments below. From time to time it still goes off on sleep mode. It warns me and says 20 minutes until sleep or however many minutes until sleep. Sometimes it just changes channel. Annoying! I think someone new moved in close to me with a similar brand TV the last 2/3 weeks. If that's not the case then I have an entity causing me bother.

I'm used to it now and just put up with it.

Thanks for your comments.

Miandra

Hey there I am sorry that you have been having to deal with problems with your television that's not fun. I don't have any advice just well wishes. My mother has been having a similar problem. Her tv shuts on and off all through the night. She says she turns it off at night and it turn on and off by itself. Just wanted to say hi and tell you that I hope you can find out what is going on. Keep us posted

Hello Bodi-Gundamma,

Thank for popping by. I love having all the latest technology.

Good news is since the Technician came by, the TV has been behaving. For how long? Who knows!

I don't know what to say but I can assure you that TV and set top box these days aren't reliable. My friend told me not to switch and waste money on it. That's why I use 80s TV and watch free channels. Saved Money and hassles:-)

Everyone

You have all been so amazing. THANK YOU.

You've all come up with ways to try and stop this unusual activity with my TV and thrown in a lot of humour along the way. Lol

You've cheered me up heaps. Since losing my brother I've been a bit down but that's getting better each day that passes. What really helps is people like all of you here on YGS. You really are an amazing community. You are kind, caring, funny, and so knowledgeable.

I really am glad I found this website and even happier to have found so many new friends.

Thank you,
Miandra.

Hello Lady-Glow,

I don't have a radio. I use my smart phone and download music, or tune into different radio stations online if I want to listen to local news.

The TV has been on its best behaviour since the Technician re-scanned all the channels, and checked if there were any prompts programmed to make the TV change channels.

So far, so good. 😊

I can't do much more than what I have. All I can do now is wait. I'm doing another cleansing shielding ritual today. I'm confident that the Technician re-scanning the TV and another cleansing will help.

I will unplug the TV for a while like you suggest. Maybe not 2 days because I love my soapies. Lol

Thanks Lady-Glow

Hi Shushantka,

That's funny. Lol

I usually watch David Attenborough, News, documentaries on animals, my usual soapies like Bold and the beautiful and Home and away. 😊

If the spirit doesn't like my choice, he can move out. Lol.
😜

Thanks for popping by. 😘

SWS - I wonder what would it happen if you unplug the TV set for a couple of days and use a radio.
If an entity is the one surfing channels, it should be able to manipulate a radio too, shouldn't it? πŸ€”

Hello Sws, Although a lot of logical and rational possibilities have already been forth putted in this issue to debunk it, so there is nothing left for me here to put except maybe you should see boring family drama serials a little less on tv. Perhaps this would give some relief to that entity and he will stop surfing channels 😜.

Thanks for sharing and lots of good wishes and love.

Hi Curious Dee,

I will definitely keep up the cleansing/shielding ritual. Thanks for guiding me to Rookdygins page. He really knows his stuff.

The hag and Steve the spirit haven't been back. Plus the unit looks and feels so clean and fresh. I love the smell of sandalwood throughout the place. The sage is nice too.

About the universal remote: Anything is possible.

Thanks again Curious Dee.

SWS,

Thank you, I know this time will go by fast. 😜

I still wonder if the issue is caused by a universal remote... Hmmmmm. But, I always say, go with your gut (intuition). If you feel it's caused by spirit activity, a cleansing can't hurt. I'm glad you are keeping up on that.

I hope things settle down for you soon 😊

Hi RcRuskin,

When I googled what could be causing this, it said that trucks passing can cause the channels to change. 😟 Weird! But to answer your question, no passing trucks because I live in a very narrow street and trucks usually use the highway several blocks down.

I can't move the TV because I'm in a very small studio type unit. Not a lot of room.

I still think it's an entity myself. The programs that the TV changes to are shows like 'the haunting', 'charmed', 'football', and 'buffy'. I don't watch any of those shows because they creep me out. That's why I get the chills every time the channel changes, with the exception to football. 😨

Thanks again for your suggestions. 😘 ❀

Hi Aporetic,

Lol... Match making indeed. The Technician was way too young for me. Lol

I live in a studio type unit. One bedroom. Its really small. I don't have much of a choice where the TV goes unfortunately.

It has to stay where it is. 😒 😳 😒

Hi again, SWS. Just browsed through the updates.

Did you notice any moving trucks in the neighborhood, since that seems to be how everyone is thinking these days, in the past few weeks, maybe even going back a month or two?

As for moving your TV to a new location, you may not need to install a new jack. Coaxial cables, which is what is commonly used for cable TV service in the US, has reliable runs in excess of 300 feet. You can pick up a length at pretty much any hardware store, and I've even seen it in some grocery stores (?) as well.

Ghostly in origin or not, I share an apartment with a human who channel surfs to my great annoyance, I much prefer TVs to stay on the channel of the program I'm watching.

Miandra, I understand about renting and what you can and can't do (mostly can't).

My last suggestion: perhaps you can find an extension cord for the cable from your tv that will allow for some freedom to move it around? I think your rental company would know about such things.

Happy channel surfing, and a pity my match making suggestion fell flat LOL

Hello Aporetic,

I can't move the TV because I only have one outlet cable in the lounge room. It would cost a fortune to get another cable put in. I don't think I'm allowed to do that because I'm renting.

I will manage. It only happens a couple/few times a day.

Thanks for getting back with more suggestions.

Hello Curious Dee,

Latest update. Technician just left. (2:18pm)

He reprogrammed the TV by running it through an automatic scan for all the channels. He checked the remote to see if any buttons were stuck. He went through channel by channel, day by day for the week ahead to see if there were any alerts programmed to prompt me and he checked to see if the sleep mode was on.

He did everything he could he said. If it continues to flicker from channel to channel after today all I can do is grin and bare it.

He said some one new must have moved in within range with a similar brand TV or universal remote that's causing it.

It's only been doing this for the last couple of weeks so it could well be that someone new has moved in the block of units next door. There are lots of trees between us so who knows.

I haven't seen you much. Hope you and your family are well. My children are grown up, but I do remember the school days. Lots of hard work for parents running to school, excursions, sport trips etc. Try and get some mummy time. A nice cup of coffee/tea.

I did another cleansing just before submitting this post. I will keep doing that every couple of weeks just in case it is an entity.

Thanks for popping by.

Hi there SWS,

I see I'm late to the party. I've been quite busy lately with the kids back to school. 😜 I see you've gotten some great advice. I look forward to your update after the tech 'does his thing'. Question: Do you have one of those universal remotes? That type would be able to operate the neighbors televisions regardless of brand/model. Just a thought.

If you feel that you're dealing with a spirit, another cleansing round may be necessary.

All the best ❀

Hello everyone,

Feedback: The TV started flicking from channel to channel. (twice in the last hour - its 10am) whiles I've been watching the 'The Morning show'. I just got off the phone from the rental company and they said the technician already installed another NEW TV and it is probably someone elses remote interfering with my TV.

I said I checked with neighbours and the lady downstairs and they have different sets and its only been doing this the last 2 weeks.

The technician is scheduled to come out today so hopefully he can shed some light. The lady I spoke to said someone new in the next block may have moved in with the same brand TV.

Let's see what the The technician says when he gets here. Looks like I have to just put up with it if he can't figure it out.

I still think its an entity.

You and the spirit are trying to hitch me up with the Tech. Lol. He was about 34, 35 years old. I'm 53 years old. That would make me a Cougar. Lol.

Miandra, the world can always do with more love, and if people can find it via social media - why not with a little help from our unseen friends? If their interventions save lives, why not also enrich them! I'm sticking with my theory LOL. It's a lovely thought.

Wishing you all the best with the television and 'other developments' hee hee

Hi Lady-Glow,

I'm glad you're well.

Yes, I'm anxious also to find out what is going on in my unit. 😨

The TV has been changed for a brand new one, so it's definitely not the actual TV.

I'm going to give it a couple of days and if it continues, I will call the Tech out again.

Chat soon.

Hello SWS - I hope you're not dealing with a ghost.

I'm doing fine, thanks for asking, a little busy but always reading YGS. I don't comment much when only using my phone... The tiny keyboard is a big challenge for my fingers! 😠

I'm looking forward to read your findings about that misbehaved TV.

Hi Rex-T,

What will I be on the look out in the contract? They've already been generous enough and changed the TV for a brand new one, same model etc. I still have over 2 more years left of the original 4 years on the contract.

I read the contract when I first got the TV but I can't remember everything verbatim. I will read it again in the morning.

Thank you. 😘 ❀ 😘

Greetings, Miandra

Oh dear, I'm rather late joining this party, and since everything's been covered (the weird, the wonderful, the technical, the funny and the paranormal), Even the neighbours' remote was covered and that was the only contribution I would have made since something similar happened with an ex of mine several years ago. In fact, I just posted a comment on the latest haunting, 'Heavy Breathing Spirit?', about to it

Gosh, the YGS community is filled with comedians. You're hilarious! Thanks for the giggles.

Hey, perhaps there's a match-maker spirit who thinks you and the techie guy have the potential to get something going on LOL.

One last word on your TV Miandra. I would suggest that you read the terms and conditions of your rental contract, particularly things that you should not do to your TV or software, that may land you in breach of your contract.

RC, I know what you are getting at with your tree analogy. Unfortunately, every time I addressed the golf ball, other golfers would dive for cover and the trees would tremble in fear.

Hello RcRuskin,

I was in stitches reading about your smart phone calculating a route home without you being aware. Lol.
(They are intelligent) They seem to do what they want to do. My phone keeps going to vibrate for incoming calls and I have continuously set it to ring using a selected tone.

Back to this 'very' smart TV... Thanks for asking your dad to shed light. I seriously believe it is the tenant who died in the bathroom or another spirit. I just have a feeling, a cold chill when it happens. I will call the Tech from the rental company if it continues to flicker from channel to channel.
(It hasn't done it today)

Thanks for the added advice. I appreciate it.

Just checked with my dad about this, as he has figured out a way to bounce his remote off two, and sometimes three, walls before the signal gets to the TV, and it works 90% of the time. I'm not sure if trees have enough mass to block a signal. There's a great chance, for example, that hitting a golf ball through a tree and not hitting even a leaf.

I've never worked with a smart TV before. Heck, I have enough problems with my so-called smart phone! I found out why it was running slow when I accidentally opened the maps app and discovered it was trying to calculate a route home.

So, my next angle of attack in this case would be to find an app on the smart TV that could be controlled by a smart phone or tablet, or even someone's computer. Were you the first person to have this particular unit? The previous owner/user may have the app on their device and are now frustrated that it isn't working with whatever TV they currently possess. (Which in this case, takes on a whole new meaning.)

Fingers crossed that it isn't the man who died here in the bathroom. 😨

I have a funny feeling the man who died isn't at rest.

Hello Armor

That's funny. (Tech forum) 😊

It hasn't done it today. If it does it again I will call the rental company. Maybe they can put some sort of buffer on the TV signal so other remotes can't change my channels. 😟

I just kept thinking the man who died in my bathroom may be mucking around trying to make himself known. 😨

Thanks for your feedback.

Hi,

Yours isn't an isolated case. Smart TVs tend to be not so smart with such glitches. Did hear similar bugs. We have a techie here, who writes her ghost stories here too, but I haven't seen her in a while. Altho I hope YGS won't think we are transforming this site into a tech forum. Just kidding.

I'm not going to encourage you to fix the TV by yourself but there are buncha Youtube vids how to disable this, depending which brand. Unfortunately, by unplugging that cable, you will also lose hdmi connections, etc. Better call a technicion and I'm sure they've had similar cases. After that, maybe we can decide if something is haunting your tube.

Cheers,

Amor

Hello Rex-T,

You made me laugh about the koala's and possum's. Funny thing is we do have possum's in our roof and in the trees at night. The mother usually piggy backs her little one. Its so adorable. Lol.

I just did what you said and unplugged the TV and counted to 10.

What RcRusskin said about the infrared beam in the remote may well be the issue. Somebody else's remote is controlling my TV.

I just have to sit back and wait now. It hasn't done it today. 😟

Thanks for your suggestions.

With regards to the 'up votes', I don't understand why its happening. I use my daily limit EVERY DAY to 'vote up' my favourite comments. Oh well. The troll is 'up vote' hungry!

Hi Miandra,

From a technical point of view, you (and the rental company) have eliminated two common causes - the TV and the remote control. I think lady-glow's suggestion was unplug the TV from the power socket and see what happens - this would require patience but it is an innovative way of splitting a normal technical hitch from something other than 'normal'.

Turning the power off (count to ten) then turning the power on is an old technician's trick that actually resets the computer.

Jubeele reminded me of something similar to RCRuskin's 'line of sight' infrared beam which was a remote garage door opener that had the same results.

Hey, maybe keep an eye on those trees for Koalas or Possums watching TV (just kidding).

By the way, Melda is quite right, since the latest rash of negative karma started (nearly a month ago) most (if not all) posters are in positive territory, so my advice is 'Be Cool' as real karma takes care of everyone.

Hello Melda,

I just 'up voted' you. Yes, someone has a problem with 'up votes'.

Yes, it's annoying when I'm watching a good program and the channel changes. Most of the time it takes ages to find the original channel. Lol.

I have switched it on and off like Lady Glow suggested, hopefully it will stop or maybe a spirit is messing with it. Perhaps the man who died in the bathroom?

Sleeping-with-steve - I won't even pretend to know what is causing the glitches with your TV. We have two in our home, one in the lounge and one in my bedroom. I constantly lose contact with the primary TV in the lounge and although I don't believe it reflects your experience at all, I know how extremely irritating it can be when you're interested in a programme and it just fades out on you πŸ˜•

What I would like to ask you is why do you keep mentioning the votes (on many of your comments) and how many "up-votes" you give? Don't worry about it, things eventually settle down to normal. I must add that it's very nice of you to cancel out the negatives but eventually things return to normal. This is a pattern which I have noticed.

I just turned the TV on and off like you suggested. I'm crossing my fingers.

PS:
I have been'up-voting' you and others just like I have now and when I look back the votes are down. πŸ˜•

I voted for cups several times a couple of weeks ago and looked back and she hasn't got the votes. Strange.

<silly but true> While doing tech support for a major cable TV provider here in the US, I received a call from a customer complaining about random letters, numbers and symbols, in random colors, on her TV. I sympathize, saying "I wouldn't want my children to see such colorful language on TV."</silly but true>

I vaguely recall a scene in a movie, I think Tim Allen was in it, involving neighbors having a duel involving remote controls that work each others' TVs. As remotes usually send a signal to the TV via an infrared beam, I suspect it would be someone with a line of sight to your TV. Do any windows in your TV room overlook a neighbor's house?
